Strange vibration

I have had this vibration since I bought the car.

New rims and tires all around didn't fix it.

Engine swap didn't fix it.

New springs and shocks (front struts still need to be replaced) didnt fix it.

The car does not pull, but I never did an alignment either, because the struts are bad and I wanted to replace them first.

The vibration occurs ar 60-75 miles an hour. It is much much worse in the rain. This leads me to believe that it is an alignment problem.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Strange vibration

could be as simple as a wheel bearing not preloaded correctly
or a strut mount

getting worse in the rain really makes me think it may be either one of those

Re: Strange vibration

Any way to check to see if it is the wheel bearing?

I think the strut mounts are alright... They look alright at least!

Re: Strange vibration

Highly doubtful the alignment will cause a vibration. Recheck the balance of the wheels, look for something caught in the vents of the rotors or a weight broken off a drum if you have rear drums. Driveshaft balance or dry, stiff u-joints is a possible cause, worn ball joints.

The best thing to do with the wheel bearings is clean them look for hot spots and galling in the rollers themselves and repack them yourself then you will know they are right.

Re: Strange vibration

Wheels have been balanced at least 3 times each since i've owned the car. It may be the driveshaft... It is original.

I tend to think it is coming from the front because it can be felt clearly through the steering wheel.

Re: Strange vibration

After I posted I figured you would have probably already re balanced the tires. If you feel it in the wheel more than the butt dyno then I would agree to concentrate on the front end. Ball joints, control arm bushings, steering linkage, wheel bearing as stated before, steering grearbox mount, unbalanced brake rotors. All are possibilities thing I have seen cause this.

How strong is the vibration? A lesser strength vibration that would lead me to think a component balance problem, sometimes you can drive past the worst of it at higher speed. A more violent vibration that gets worse with higher speed would lead me to worn parts.

Good luck hope this might give you some ideas.
