How much of a difference would there be for performance and looks between these two tire sizes?

215/65-15 to a 225/60-15

I did some math and found the diameter to be 25.94 inches for the 215/65's and 25.62 inches for the 225/60's. How much of a noticeable would this be?

Here is what the car looks like now.

Yep, use 235/60/15. You'll be happy with those. They look great and perform very well.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
I agree with using 235/60-15 size to replace the 215/65-15.They are roughly the same diameter but you give the car an improved footprint.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
My bro has 235s all around, they are almost exactly the same size, and perform much better. Definately hood about better than 215s. They look pretty "meaty" in person.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
I'm having some trouble finding a 235/60-15 tire that is a good all-season tire. I need something that is decent in light snow and good in rain, but has good looks and is a radial tire and will perform fine on the dry pavement also. Basically just a really well-balanced tire.

I WAS gonna go with the Falken ze912's in 215/65-15, but they don't make them in 235's. Price is also a factor, in I don't want to spend more than ~$350 for the tires alone.

i found the cheapest tires i can find that are thos size and cheapest i found at afew local tire shops were $130 a tire. with taxes in. i paid about $300 for 2 tires.
in my photo you can still see the blue stuff around the letters on the rear tires lol

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
15" tires selection is shrinking,16" is somewhat also,as fewer new vehicles use them.I have Uniroyal Tiger Paws(235/60)on my 15" wheels. They are a good performing all season tire.General XP2000 was a good tire but I don't know if they still hold up well.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
My old school BFG radial T/As are great! I just let my last set go on the car that I sold but I will buy them again when I have more 15" rims. I drove the hell out of them in the snow/rain in Northern Indiana and Ohilo and never had a better 15" car tire. I had tiger paws for a while and also Dunlops. They were good but not as good as the BFG.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
I have used a 235/60 and a 245/60 tire before and liked the looks and performance of both. There's still the 'ol bfg radial t/a in those sizes for good prices.
BTW poppn, you've got a nice looking car I like the gold.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
Thanks for all the help and compliments guys

I think I have decided on getting the original 215/65's though, as the choices are limited for the 235's and I can't find any to my liking.

I have narrowed it down it a few tires. This is what I have selected so far:

BFG Traction T/A

Bridgestone Potenza G 009
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=Potenza+G+009

Yokohama AVID H4S

Any input or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
I would re-iterate one more time, the BFG radial T/A. It's old school, but a great tire.

The traction T/A I run on my Prius. It's a good tire.

The Potenza has given me an 80 mph blowout on the freeway when it got hot. No more of those for me.

I haven't driven the yokohama...

My freind bought a set last year. Try to find a local Firestone dealer, and ask for Daytons.

235/60/15 is a fairly common size, it shouldnt be a big deal.

Remember the quicker wearing tires are cheaper, its a very sticky tire, and should be decent in the snow.

It cost him $50 a tire for mounting and balancing.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
I think I might end up going with the BFG Radial T/A's as I don't think I can part with the raised white letters

Thanks for the suggestions! They aren't that pricey either, I should be able to get the whole package done for about $400 and have a little wider tire over the 215's.

Thanks alot guys

here is a link to the BFG's. I'd like more input from those who have them if at all possible

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
I put a lot of miles on my radial t/a tires. I first bought a set for my 90 firebird. After running them I never looked back. I have run them on fwd and rear drive, big car and small. Rain, snow, dust and dry.

I will buy more of them.

Daytons ARE raised white lettering, that was a huge deciding factor. Anyways, ud prolly end up paying around $300 for Daytons if you buy them from a firestone dealer, and have them installed.

However, i think BFG has a longer tread life. Daytons are an incredibly soft tire, and would probably only last one or two years depending on how much you drive. Its up to you.

If you go with BFG, ud have to install yourself as i see youre purchasing from TireRack.

If you want to order online, id go with Discount, they give free shipping.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
So today I was looking at my front tires to see how much clearance there is when the wheel is turned lock to lock. There is only about an inch or so between the tire and the wheelwell in the front. This is with 215/65-15s.

Would it be alright if I ran a 215/65 in the front and a 235/60 in the rear? I feel it might look a little more aggressive that way and I wouldn't have to worry about clearance in the front as it is already pretty close. This is with BFG Radial T/A's.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
Be thou not afraid:

Many of us run 235s here and there aren't many complaints about rubbing. I CAN make them rub if I sit in a parking lot and turn the wheel one way to lock and then drive in a tight circle.

Other than that, there is no problem. I'm talking 100,000 miles of normal driving and I never had tire trouble.

It's not just me; lots of the guys here run that size with no problems.

One way to check. Buy two for the rear but go ahead and run them on the front for a couple of days just to check while you have two old ones on the rear. If you decide you can't deal with it, then put them on the back; you've lost nothing.

My theory is that you'll head back to the tire store to have two more put on the back to match.

Good luck!

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
One more thing;

I run those on V8 cars, V6 cars, and even one 4 banger car. I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM!

I hope this helps!

You can go 235s all around, with no problems. The Firebird aluminum wheels, and z/28 aluminum 15s are pretty well identical for back spacing, offset etc...

If you look in that picture of my car, its 235s all around. I never had anything rub. I have power steering, and turn lock to lock often for parallel parking or 3pt turns, never had a problem.

Im also running 275/40/17 in the front on a special offset wheel, the width is not an issue. And remember the later third gens came with 245s all around.

.

I would also highly recommend 235s all around, that way you can rotate them. We all know how our cars tend to wear out the rears quicker.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
Agreed, 235's will be fine. I had a '92 RS v8 that seemed to have sagging springs. For quite a while I ran a set of 245/60's on stock 15in Z28 wheels and never one experienced a rub issue.
On the other hand though, I also had an '89 iroc with the 15in iroc wheels and it had 215/60 (not 65) on the front and 235/60 on the rear. I though that looked pretty cool too.

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
i have 235 on all 4 corners.
but i also lowered the front end of my car. it needs a wheel alignment so when you turn sharp enough. it makes a terrible sound. its nastsy.
i lowed the front 2 inches.
my question is.
is it because it needs a wheel alignment. tahts why its rubbing agaist something or is it because to wide of front tires?
i was thinking of going with 215 on the front.
will 205 work for the front or will it just look retarted?

Re: 215/65-15 to 225/60-15
FYI, 235/60/15 were a stock size back about 1985-86, when you ordered a new T/A with the TPI engine, but NOT WS6.
Most people think that TPI and WS6 went together, but they could be ordered seperate.
I to, have a set of wheels with 235s on the rear, and plan on running that same size on the front, as the 215s are shot!

235,235,235,235!!

Leon
