4th Gen Spindles?
We're playing around with the idea of making a set of dropped spindles for the '86. But I had a couple questions before I went out and bought a set to carve up.
Is there any difference between the third and fourth gen spindles that will make a swap impossible?
If it's possible, is there any sort of benefit? Weight, geometry, strength?
Does anyone make a third-gen dropped spindle already?

4th gens use a front hub that bolts on to the spindle. If you're fabricating a whole new spindle you may be able to adapt the 4th gen hub to it and make it easier to adapt to 4th gen brakes at the same time.

It's not worth it. 4th gen hubs are useless in a performance application, they wear out too fast.

I was going to use the 3rd gen spindle and then make the 4th gen caliper and rotor fit on it.

These guys made a "drop spindle" by making some sort of king pin extension. Might be worth a try?

Racecraft is starting to make dropped spindles, but I haven't seen anyone test them yet.

Looks like a new balljoint. There is a nut on the bottom that goes through the a-arm and a spacer before it gets the spindle. Any one seen anything like this before?

Re: 4th Gen Spindles?
It's a mono-ball, been around for years in race cars. It's bascially a captured heim joint with stud that uses spacers to allow you to adjust the height of the joint.
Great solution for a racecar, not so great on the streat as they are open to the elements. The whole reason for extending the lower mount of the spindle isn't to lower the car, it's to get the a-arm sloped down towards the wheel. This helps to increase the negative camber curve of the strut suspension. Since the camber gain of a strut setup is so much less than a double a-arm setup it needs all the help it can get.

Re: 4th Gen Spindles?
Wondering about an update on the spindles? What did you finally end up doing? I am looking to put 4th gen wheels on my 87 up front. Has anyone modified the 3rd gen spindle to accept the hub for a 4th gen. This is to avoid the cost of buying the front wheel 3rd/4th gen spacers. Anyone know if this has been done?

Hah, if you think wheel adapters are expensive, you don't even want to know the cost of making new spindles.
Wheel adapters are the most cost effective solution.
