NEW Spohn front end kit...? vs. all Moog
Hey guys... in all my searching, it looked like the kit that Spohn had been selling was made up of Moog components with their own tie rod adjusters thrown in there. When I went to their site now, it shows that they're selling kits using all components that they've made in-house - everything. Does anyone know how their stuff compares to Moog components? Any experience?
I was about to pull the trigger on full Moog components through Rock Auto ($310 shipped, including ball joints, plus $30 to get some aftermarket tie-rod adjusters)... but came across this which runs $360 shipped with ball joints.
Any experience with Spohn's in-house front end components??

I am also ready to buy the Spohn Kit. I feel it is a good deal with all the parts shipped to my door (including ball joints) for $363. I didn't like the idea of chasing the parts down one by one and I know they will fit with good quality. Also the zinc coating is a plus.

Yeah I don't think it's a bad deal at all... I was just wondering if anyone had some experience with their quality relative to Moog's.

I plan to buy this kit as well when I do my suspension overhaul. Spohn is great, so I couldn't see much going wrong or being wrong with them. Go for it, let us know how the install goes if you do.

I purchased the kit from Spohn with my whole front end kit. The parts are going to be delivered today. I'll let you know.

Huh... didnt know they were making their own parts now. I wouldnt hesitate to try that package out. I got all new parts locally when I did my swap...but Im going to keep this in mind when I need to rebuild. Thats a good price for everything included and I would trust the quality.

Yeah please let us know how the parts look. If you even have a way to compare them to Moog's stuff... that'd be awesome too. I'm ready to do this work on my car... just waiting to hear about their components!

Re: NEW Spohn front end kit...? vs. all Moog
I think the Spohn kit looks great. I just bought all the Moog steering parts about 6 months ago and wish this Spohn kit was around then.
Whatever you do, go with aftermarket tie-rod adjusters. I got mine from UMI, however, they were two long and had to have an inch or 2 or 3 cut off of each one. Works great now though.

Well my kit will all be in tomorrow... ordered the full steering kit from Spohn. I'll post back with impressions too... but no matter what I'd put on, it'll be a huge improvement over what it is now.

Re: NEW Spohn front end kit...? vs. all Moog
Wow, this is a little creepy...I just posted this exact same questions a few days ago on a thread of mine on frrax.com...and I also have a 92 RS with a WCT5 and 4th gen 3.23's. I have a 355 TBI, though
. Let us know how it goes. I'm about to pull the trigger on the spohn kit but I want to know it's good quality first.
On the topic of the difference between the two, I actually called spohn about a week ago and asked about it. I was told the main difference was the finish and the way the threads are cut. He told me they use die to cut the threads opposed to having them rolled. When they were selling moog, they had problems with the threads not being clean. On the other hand, rolled threads are actually stronger. However, it's not the threads on these that are the problem...its the joints wearing out. Anyway, the only other real difference is the obvious coating difference. The guy at Spohn claimed you pay a lot for the Moog name, which is why they can offer the same (or better) quality for a lower price.

HAH! And your name is JOSH!!!!!!! Same here! Any chance your car is black?? That'd be great...
Yeah the parts all seem to be of good quality, and I will let everyone know what the verdict is from when I do the install, but I don't see any way that they'll be lacking really... and I don't have Moog components that I can directly compare them against. So ya! I'll keep this thread updated... hopefully I can get to it this weekend if the rain holds off...

No, mine's green. Oh well, I suppose coincidences have to end somewhere...
Good luck with the install. Don't forget to align it afterward. Were you having any suspension/steering problems that prompted you to replace everything?

Yes, alignment will be happening for sure. And ya, a lot of the components are just a bit loose and sloppy, and the passenger side ball joint is shot. I'm just hoping that there isn't any damage to the other components. We'll see when I get in there! And the steering box will be adjusted to spec too...

Well I ordered the Spohn Frontend kit today. This will be the first time, I will have had frontend work done on my car since I have owned it (and it is 22 years) so I can't complain.
Re: NEW Spohn front end kit...? vs. all Moog
Received the Spohn front end kit including lower ball joints today and the quality looks good. The zinc coating looks better then Moog's bare metal.

Re: NEW Spohn front end kit...? vs. all Moog
Well I received mine... and the quality does look great having it all here in person. Upon closer inspection though, I found that my main issue is actually with slop in the gearbox, not the linkages. I've actually been meaning to post that up in the for sale section, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I would have put it in anyways to get all-fresh components, but I think I'm going to try to find a different chassis to build on first. Like I said though... the quality appears to be excellent...
Re: NEW Spohn front end kit...? vs. all Moog
Installed the Spohn front end kit at the end of April and everything went in great. Results are no slop in the steering and it feels & looks like new again.
Since then also installed KYB struts & shocks. Last of the 21+ year old parts under the car that needed replacing.

Re: NEW Spohn front end kit...? vs. all Moog
I purchased the complete kit from Spohn. As everyone else said, it looks great.
BUT, one of my outer tie rods is messed up. I realized this when I was trying to get the gun on the grease fitting. It just wouldn't stay on there. So I pulled the grease fitting off the tie rod to find it stripped and the nipple for the gun to slip on was deformed. Here is a picture of the two out tie rod great fittings, side by side. It is clear that the one on the left is messed up. But this is no big deal. I trust Spohn will have superior customer service and I'll get this taken care of easily enough.
EDIT: I called tech support over at Spohn and they are sending me a new tie rod with a return shipping label so I don't have to pay for any shipping. It was a no questions asked process and I am throughly pleased with their product and service so far... *knock on wood* (It's not over yet).
