Funky tire wear...and more...

Okay, here's what's going on....hopefully someone can guide me in the right direction on this....

The front tires are showing significant more wear on the outside edge than anywhere else on the tire. The right side is significantly worse, as it has started to show cord.

While driving the car...the steering seems to be "softer" turning to the left than the right...I hope that you understand what I mean by softer.

Car also tends to pull slightly to the left....

Someone suggested it may be the lower rod ends....what do you guys think? I appreciate it!

Check for worn components, replace any if found and get an alignment.

deff check for worn componets. if its pulling then it needs an alignment wich makes sense that its wearing tires. id sugest finding out exactly wat is worn replace it and take it in for an alignment. wat are the roads like in your area if they are like mine then sumthing could be bent

Re: Funky tire wear...and more...

Good advice from everyone however I had a similar experience. In my case all the components had been replaced. Absolutely everything including a-arm bushings, strut mounts, drop springs and all linkages. Had an alignment done at a very reputable shop but still had excessive tire wear on the outside edges of the front tires.
In investigating, I learned that 3rd gens can barely get enough negative camber with OEM style replacement parts. Using lowering springs makes the situatuion worse. Add to that an aggresive driving style ( I like freeway on ramps and off ramps! ) and worn tires are what you get.
I've purchsed a set of Spohn strut mounts that provide additional adjustment for negative camber. Hopefully this problem won't repeat itself when the new car goes together this spring.
Somewher here, I've read about alignment specs that differ from the shop manual values.
I'd be happy if anyone else can chime in on this.

Sounds like a ball joint or your camber is off...I would check the ball joint first...If the tire isn't cupping or scalloping then its not a tie rod issue. Pics of the tire would help. Shock could be binding up. Do you hear a rattle from the front end when hitting bumps?

Re: Funky tire wear...and more...

if you lightened the front of the car with aluminum heads, battery relocation, this and that, then the specs for the alignment will differ for a "heavy" stock car vs a "light" modded car. so your car is lifted so to say and riding more on the outside of the tires with its positive. i think you need a custom alignment if that's the case

but if it's pulling to a particular side an alignment is needed regardless of weight difference.

If the camber is different from side to side it can cause a pulling problem. The vehicle will pull to the side with the more positive camber.

if thats the case it shouldnt take a custom alignment just one to put them back into spec.

He could needs just a simple alignment but if the alignment is the problem wearing of the tire is either going to be cupped or scalloped looking. You wear the whole tire when alignment is off not just one side. If the tread on the outside of the tire (tread facing away from the engine) is more worn than the inside (the side facing the engine) then it is more than likely a ball joint. I have replaced these on my DD and on my camaro and it fixed my tire wear problem both times.

Changing little things like battery placement and aluminum heads is not going to make the car sit enough higher to wear the tires like your describing. Now if he moved the engine to the rear or middle of the car then yes. If there is no noticeable fender to wheel gap change then its not from lightening the front end then this is not the cause.
