you have two options, either get a new rear end that already has discs, or get a disc brake comversion kit. the new rear end could run you only a couple hundred bucks, and the conversiuon kit is $800 from baer. i knwo, cause i want to do teh same thing to mine.

Get a whole new rear end? Damn, didnt think it would be that much trouble. But I dont have $800. So where should I look to get the new rear? Im guessing a junk yard. So what car should I get it off of?

Any car with rear discs. Preferably 89-up rear discs, those had the PBR aluminum calipers (very nice setup!) Ignore 82-83 units if you can; those have non-metric brake fittings. 84-88 disc brakes had recalls on them; they'll probably need to be rebuilt.

Oh and make sure you get an axle with rear gearing you want.

I have heard that swapping in rear disks on a drum car is a pain because of the emergency brakes setup on the discs. Check it out before you jump.

I am currently in the process of doing this swap. I have an '84 Z28 with rear drum brakes and am installing a '92 camaro rear end with disc and posi 3:42's. I have run into several problems but the emergency brake bolted up fine, you just need to make sure to get the extra bracket that bolts over the existing one already on the car. The first problem was the rear brake line going into the old proportioning (pro.) valve was horizontal and the new pro. valve('92) has the line entering it vertically. I changed out the entire rear brake line with the later model and solved this prob. The next prob was the new pro. valve requires all coarse thread fittings where as my '84 had 1 coarse thread fitting and 4 fine thread fittings. To correct this prob I will either replace the 2 front caliper lines with late model lines, find adapter fittings (fat chance) or have some custom lines made by "Inlinetube". The third prob is the the lines coming from the master cylinder are not in the correct position but I believe I can replace these with some late model peices out of the wrecking yard.

Monkie, you should not have to worry about the differing fittings because you already have the late model pro. valve.

I had really hoped that this would be more of a "bolt in" procedure, but hey, ( We have the technology" so go for it.

Since I have a 92 and if I use a 92 rear wouldnt it make it really easy for me to swap it into my car? Thanks!! Im very new to the rear/brake area.

It should be easy provided there is not a difference in the prop. valves other than the valving. maybe someone else can shed a little light. I will be making several calls tuesday and will go the wrecking yard and get some more info.

I believe the prop valve is different, for all years, between discs and drums. It was in 89-92 where the same (originally drum-only) master cylinder was used for both types of brake systems.

84IROC, did you know about Classic Tube? http://www.classictube.com You can get brake lines for good prices; in either stainless steel or regular steel.

Also, you can probably bend your own tubes. Pep Boys sells pre-flared line; make sure to get the ISO flares (bubbles) and not the SAE double-flares (V's). It seemed that the lines that fit my prop valve had a "blue" color-coded fitting, and were sold under the foreign car type of lines. (Metric)

Well evidently the prop valves changed several times because the one I bought new for a '92 has all coarse thread fittings whereas the one I just picked up at a local wrecking yard (off an '89) has the same thread types as my '84(although it is the newer style (aluminum instead of cast iron). I had to use the master cylinder off the '89 also because one of its lines was diffferent. Luckily it only cost me $15. Unfortunately I was unable to determine if the '89 had rear disc because the RPO sheet was nowhere to be found, the entire rear suspension was gone, all of the e-brake hardware was history (including the extra little bracket that the rear disc cars use to mount the e-brake cables on the lower side of the body) all GONE. I even searched for parts on the ground all around the car looking for evidence that this was once a rear disc(J65) equipped car! Oh well, if I end up with too much pressure to rear brakes I'll just install an adjutable unit in the rear line and be done with it.... BTW I bled the brakes today and all seems well, after I finish reassembling the car (had just got it back from the paint shop when I started the rear end swap) I'll take it out for a test drive.

I drove the car today with the '92 rear end swap completed and the rear disc brakes are working great! Love the look of rear disc! Best money I ever spent!

BTW I got my Zexel diff. from SLP the other day but not sure when I'll install it though.

If you have any questions about this swap feel free to E-mail me. polenda@flash.net
