Steering column question (New here and to third gens)

I have an 89 Firbird Formula that I just bought not to long ago. It wasnt running whne I bought it and now its all running and what not. So my next big issue is the steering column moves a good inch or two in any direction at anytime... Im not talking about just the steering wheel the whole column just to make that clear. Is it time to head to the junkyard and get a new column or is there a rebuild kit or something else I need to look at?

Post #3 (my post) will give you a link to the fix & what I did.
The link makes it sound easy. It isn't & requires specialized tools.

If you don't have the specialized tools, don't bother.

Here are pics of the inside of a later model one, so what he's doing is different, but the pics still give you a decent idea of what's going on in there.

Maybe you just need to tighten the bolt on the shaft? Mine was loose and i had a good inch or two of slack... Tightened it and poof fixed.

Yeah Im thinking its the whole column. The tilt part of the column is tight but if you pop the hood and have someone move the column around the whole shaft is moving. Havent looked into a fix yet but if someone can point me in the right direction thatd be awesome!

There is a bearing and a cover that keeps the shaft still, if the cover comes off or slips down and the bearing slips down then the column will have some play and you will see the shaft move.

At the firewall where the column comes out, there should be a cover with a round metal clip holding the cover to the large part of the shaft.
