Aluminum Drums

I was wondering how can you tell if they are aluminum or iron? Also, how do you go about taking them off the car? I want to go to the junk yard and rip some off and slap them on my car! also, any notable preformance gains? thanks!

Aluminim will be grey colored, and cast iron will be black/dark colored or reddish (rust). And they just pull off once the wheels are off, but more often than not, they're stuck on due to rusty hubs or seized shoes, so take a mallet with you and use it to bang around the hub and studs while pulling on the drum.

There's a theoretical performance gain, but it's not "noticable". I also hear they warp easily or quicker than cast irons, but I've had mine for I don't know how long without problems.

Scratch it with a key, screwdriver or something that's harder than aluminum. If it's shiny underneath, it's aluminum.

Pick it up. If it's light it's aluminum.

This one is too easy. Take a magnet. If it sticks, it's cast iron. If it doesn't, it's aluminum.
I'd also like to kknow the most common models they're found on. Will g-body drums work? Has anybody actually weighed them and found out the difference per drum?

I've heard they're about 5 pounds lighter. Thats pretty good. Also, they've got a little more width than cast irons ones to give your rear end a little meaner stance. I think GM drums are universal throughout their entire line up. So any GM drum will fit any GM car/truck.

Car: '83 Firebird (T/A Clone)
Engine: 350 carbed with L-69 components
Transmission: 700R-4 w/2000 RPM stall converter
Axle/Gears: 10-bolt/3.73 ..
It is only too obvious if they are aluminum...I have aluminum drums on my car...they came from a '84 H.O. Z-28...have not weighed them yet...

Well, not the C/K platform trucks. Their bolt pattern is about a 1/4 inch wider than the F or G platform cars. I don't know about the W/T platform trucks, but I would assume they're even heavier built than the C/Ks.
