4th gen. rear

is a 4th gen. rear axle as a whole a direct bolt in? if it has disc brakes do i need new brake lines? can my stock 91 z28 wheels fit on the axle w/o modification? im looking for a reaaxle w/ 3.42's or 3.73's and positraction. i will probably visit a junkyard around here...found a 99 v6 w/ 3.23's and a pegleg for $250, and through other posts this seems like the best route to go because i'd have to pay some body to put the gears and posi in....and that can get pretty expensive..what do yall think?

It is a direct bolt-in however it's also 2 inches wider on each side so you'll need proper backspacing wheels or your stock ones will stick out.

Hey Kermit, that's with the 4th gen rear?? Whoah! Looks really nice! Did you have any probs putting it in? I've heard they are basically just a direct bolt-in, but you know how people talk...!

What about the brakes? Did you upgrade, switch, or anything? Reason I'm asking is because I have an '83 T/A with rear drums, and I want to upgrade to the stronger 4th gen and get the disc brakes too, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Poncho,Yep thats the 4th gen rear.I was really suprised that my wheels didn't stick out from under the car, they're pretty much dead even with the fennder. It really was a direct swap.it took about 3 hours to do.I went from rear drum to 4 wheel disc. You will need to change the proportioning valve though,I'm still driving it without it but the brakes aren't all that great.I picked one up from a 92 Z28,i just have'nt had time to put it in.The only PITA is the e-brake cables and even they came out alright. They are the only part of the swap that isn't a direct fit. It's hard to explain what needs to be done but once you have the rear in the car its easy to figure out.

Oh,i noticed you have a an 83.Your proportioning valve and master cylinder are different then mine so you may want to check on that first.I don't know if 83 ever had 4 wheel disc but I had a 84 z28 with 4 wheel disc so if it came down to it you could just get a mastercylinder and proportioning valve for that set up.Check out the 1LE posts it has some good info on this subject.

Yeah, Brake lines worked fine,I used the soft line from the 4th gen end it hooked up to my hardline with no problems.(i'm talking about the rubber brake line that connects the rearend hardlines to the hardlines on the body.)I didn't use anything else from the 4th.I already had hotchkis control arms and panhard rod and my sway bar works fine on the 4th gen rear.
