Found the infamous wonderbar on a....

91 Z28? I was changing my sisters oil today on her 91 Z (all stock, 1 previous owner, never raced car), and I saw a wonderbar. I wasnt sure if it really was one, but I got the one I have sitting in my garage and held it up where it should go, and sure enough, it was one! I thought these only came on IROCs? Maybe I have been reading everything wrong that gets posted on the board? Was this an option, could there be an RPO code for it? Any thoughts?

I know that, that where I got mine, I am just wondering why there is one on this car. I could have sworn they only came on IROC?

That sounds like the infamous GM "What are we gonna do with these left over parts?" Kinda like them using our style 16" wheels on the S-10s. They had the casting for the face already, so they just changed the offset to fit the 92-93 S-10s. It's not that unusual for someone to find something like that on their cars. I had a 80 Malibu that had the 2.56 rear end in it. No where could I find that those cars came with that. Everyone I told said I was nuts. But it was stamped on the axle housing. The car was one owner before I bought it, and he hadn't changed it. It was a dog off the line. Later I found out that the only thing GM used those on were 1/2 ton trucks and Caprices. Somehow they decided to put it on that car.

Just got through putting a Global West TS14 steering box brace in my 91Z (same as a wonderbar basically), and I didn't have one there! As AJ said, leave it to GM to mix things up a bit!

wait a minute... who says that that 1 previous owner didn't add it on there? or they had it repaired and the shop stuck it on there so they could have something else to charge the insurance company? that's not unheard of you know...

The car has never been in a wreck, there are no signs of any body work, and any chassis welding. The guy the car was bought from was some older guy, didnt seem like he raced. The engine and the rest of the suspension is all completely stock. Maybe someone just stuck it on there for the heck of it? I dunno. My sisters car handles damn good, so I cant wait to put that thing on my car, I hope it makes a difference.

Wait- you mean there's a good chance that every S-10 I laughed at because it had Camaro rims came with them from GM? Woah. (Of course, a few S-10's had the Camaro center caps, so I'll still laugh at those few.)

Somehow I don't think that when GM lost the IROC sponsorship contract, they also lost teh ability to install the frame brace... the first one of those I ever personally saw, after I realized what it was and that it was there, was on a 91 or 92 1LE car; so they definitely came on cars other than IROCs at least after Chevy was no longer the IROC sponsor.

I saw one on a 91Z the other day too. Can't say anything for the history of the car, but looked pretty stock with the exception of Flowmaster.
