Has anyone installed a roll cage ?

I'm settin' up a 86 iroc for casual roadrace work and i was wondering if anyone has installed a roll cage in there car ? I can do the welding, but was wondering if a cage is available specificly for our cars. Who? How much ?

Thanks, Brad

Chassis Engineering sells a roll cage kit for third gens. So doeas S&W race cars. 10 point cage kits start at around $200.

I wouldn't bother with a kit if It were me. If you can weld and fabricate, you'll get a much better product if you custom build your own cage. The kits that I have seen for camaros don't include halo bars. they're basically a roll bar with some downtubes tacked on and no real "engineering" put into them.

i agree they are just a basic hoop and a bunch of straight tubing. i plan on doing one in my car too but dont know how yet so i would like to know what other people plan on doing or have done. i plan on a stainless steel cage. custom bent at a fab shop to go right along the roof so it doesnt stick down. and a low door bar so as i dont have to climb over it.i will cut/notch and weld it myself just need it bent to the roof contours. but i also want to put a five point harness in and i dont know how i am going to put the shoulder straps in and still utilize the rear seats if a want passengers. any ideas people?? i was thinking a removeable crossbar that the shoulder straps would go on.
maybe a center bar going vertical on the tranny tunnel for one shoulder strap and the other on the main hoop? /|-|-|\ look like that kinda?

Have you ever looked at the gorilla cage for the ricers? It totally boxes in the rear of the car, yet leaves room for the rear passengers, what it does basically is creates a square around the rear seats, with bars above the passengers, below, in back and in front of them with mounting surfaces for 5 pt harnesses for the front seats if they are needed. If i have the skill/knowledge/equipment to do a cage for myself in the future, ill most likely design something similar to this as i would still like to have those rear seats if possible, and also tie the cage into the subframe.

You can bolt the harnesses to the floor and run them up the back of the seat, or my favorite inside the seat. Just make very sure that you use good washers and that the floor boards are in really good shape, because if you ever need them(hopefully that never happens) you don't want the harness pulling through the floor.

Trouble with mounting the harnesses like that is that it will never pass a tech inspection.

You could make a mini roll bar. Instead of the main hoop going right across the car it just goes behind the driver then back down to the floor. The back bar then only goes behind the driver. Entry to the rear still wouldn't be possible on the driver side but there wouldn't be any obstruction on the passenger side. The forward and rear down tubes would still cause slight problems.

I don't know if we're thinking about the same cage, but the one that I looked at once, called "monkey bars" had fine print that said (not intended as a safety cage, for cosmetic use only).

That's damn good. What did you do to get that Honda down into the 13's? My friend and I are working on a new 4-link rear to get front drive cars better 60 ft times and do our best to keep them streetable witout breaking axles and CV's. Keep up the good work.

Kenny Brown makes a roll cage for 3rd & 4th gen. They look pretty slick, I saw an install of one on Horsepower TV. Doesn't restrict access at all for front/back, bolts in and works great.. Also operation thunderchicken in GMHTP uses it and they do nothing but praise it.

Installed a 6 point roll bar with diagonal and seat back brace in both of the ones that I have owned. They work! I spun and flipped my previous RS and landed on the side rolling on to the roof. My only injury was a scratch on one knee from the T-top glass when I released my harness and climbed out! Also helps alot with chassis stiffening . The car had the side bars connected to the front and rear of the frame connectors. Every sheet metal part on the car was totaled except the drivers door and it still opened and closed like new.
