Removing Coil Springs
Removing Coil Springs
Hey all, I am going to be removing my lowering springs in the front and replacing them with the OEM springs. I was wondering what the easiest method is for doing this and if anyone has had any good luck with any short cuts. Best I can tell is to use a spring compressor and remove the control arm bolts. Does any of the brake, tie rod, stab bushing/link have to be removed as well?

Re: Removing Coil Springs
You need the spring compressor that goes inside the spring (free rental at autozone,etc.). Then, you need a 3-4 inch chunk of metal pipe (like metal electrical conduit) that is large enough to put over the main screw in the compressor - that way you can compress the spring farther than the tool normally allows.
No need to remove the A-arm bolts - just let the A-arm down, compress the spring until you can get it in there, and jack up the A-arm until you can get the strut back up in the tower and get the nut on the top. Then remove the compressor through the botto of the spring/A-arm.

Keep safety foremost in your mind. I'd chain the spring to the a-arm (or purchase a dental/medical plan). A search will no doubt reveal a ton of tips on the procedure.

I've done this countless times with a floor jack and no compressor but if your doing this for the first time, invest in one or a decent size chain
I have a hoist now and just use the vehicles weight to release the spring, pop the strut's nut off and I'm done. Spring swaps take 15mins now. Rear springs are basically the same except you can unbolt the shocks from the bottom.

Re: Removing Coil Springs
heres how:
Front:
jack up the car on both sides and put on jack stands
take tires off (duh)
un do the break lines from the strut and wall
now, jack up the a-arm, ever so slightly, just to releive some pressure
take the sway bar end link off (careful, if these get to hot, they'll snap)
now, take the strut bolts out. when removing the second one, hold the brake assembly and gently let it rest twords the outside of the car, now let the jack down slowly and stand off by the mirror(COULD use a compressor for added safety but i didnt)
the spring should pop out but if it gets stuck while the a-arm is completely down just try to pop it out with something and try to stay out the way(put the brake assembly on a towel)
re-assemble with new stuff
Rear:
jack up both sides, put on jack stands
get under the car and compress the springs with your hand and turn it till it wants to come out (dont worry, theres no pressure on these ones at all)
re-install new stuff
and your done.
no need to take off the shocks or the tires even.
i know some of you guys wont agree with my methods but hey, i got mine done

How much for em, i was actually getting ready to order them off JEG's lol, how old are they?
Re: Removing Coil Springs
I actually just posted them in the classified section as well. Looking for 175 shipped. They have around 7-8k on them, still look as good as the day I put them on. I think they are around 7 years old? I still have the orginal box that they will be shipped in as well.
