bump steer kit? who what where why?

i need one. who makes them? i see them all over for mustangs and such, but not much for 3rd gens.

i have stock steering, s10 box, and my spindles were drilled out for a bumpsteer kit at one point, so i need to get one back onto the car due to not haveing the "taper" in the tie rod hole anymore.

Re: bump steer kit? who what where why?

The bumpsteer kit is an adjustable tie rod end (with shims) a set of locknuts, a tube sleeve and a 1/2"or 5.8 rod end depending on what adjustable ball stuf you use. They fit the stock taper. If yours was drilled out, someone was cheap enough to just use a normal bolt.

Speedwaymotors has all the parts to put one together but as said, the adjustable tie rod ends are tapered. Sounds like you need new spindles.

Re: bump steer kit? who what where why?

what size were the spindles drilled to? need to know that to be able to do anything.

you will need a heavyduty swadged tube, .095 wall, 9" long, threaded female both ends 5/8-18 lefthand and righthand. a 5/8 right hand thread rod end, high quality 3 pc is best. a stock inner tie rod, and a left and right hand 5/8 18 jam nut for each side.

you can use aluminum thread hex bars too, but they will have to be shorter, and i dont have those measurements. I have put together a few sets with swadged tube and 9" works well.

now, you need measure the hole in the spindle. i assume its drilled to 1/2" since 5/8 would leave little material. the rod ends need to have this size bore, or you ahve to use a reducer. Then you need the approtiate diameter bolt about 4" long or so.

then you need to pickup some different length spacers to set the height of the tie rod, and a locking nut for the bolt. These will need to be sized based on what the bolt ends up being.

or just get new spindles....

Re: bump steer kit? who what where why?

new spindles are not an option due to the fact that these spindles have been machined for the wilwood drag brakes im running.

Why is the sleeve shorter with hex tubing? Should be the same length IMO, both have 2 jam nuts, 1 original tie rod end and a 5/8 rod end. That makes it all the same length as the swaged steel tube.

Re: bump steer kit? who what where why?

Spohn carries them. They have a basic description on the page. You might have to talk to them to get a different bolt size since theres does not require drilling the spindles. Else you could just modify new spindles. It only takes about 2 hours to modify a pair of spindles.

http://www.spohn.net/shop/1982-1992-...GM-F-Body.html

Steve Spohn explains them in the video on that page along with the features.

Support Page:
http://support.spohn.net/questions/4...gnment+shop%3F

This page covers general alignment and should have the installation instructions.

Can you put a list together with part # & quantity ? Did you document the build & install in a thread somewhere. I cant seem to find it.

It would be good tech info to be stickyed

Thanks

The 9" tube like i suggested, threads a lot further onto the stock inner tie rod. Aluminum hex bars with the internal threads almost always have 1.5" deep threads, no more. So they will work if you are using rod ends on both sides, but since the threaded part of the tie rod is a lot longer than 1.5", a 9" piece wont work.

so like i said. you can use a piece of aluminum hex, but the length would need to be shorter than the 9" i suggested, probably 1-1.5" shorter. I was shooting for maximum thread engagement with my setup, thats why i used the swaged tube in the longest size i could. The extra length of the inner tie rod would be able to extend into the larger, inside of the swaged tube after the threads.

Re: bump steer kit? who what where why?

I put together a parts list with the help of //<86T>\\ and Twin_Turbo.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/susp...it-sleeve.html

With upgraded parts and shipping I was in around $100. That is a lot cheaper than Spohn and better parts. I have not installed mine yet, currently getting the car painted, but I will be putting them in within the next few weeks.

I have bought aluminum hex from Coleman and they were NOT threaded all the way to the middle, and the sleaves I bought were only 5" long. I could not get the stock inner tie rod end in the sleeve far enough so I just bought steel ones from someone else

thats good to know if thats indeed true, i have no reason to doubt you. I have not bought from Coleman, but every other outfit i have bought from have never had more than 1.5" of threads. I would believe though, that after a certain length, they are no longer fully threaded because it would be pointless and impossible to do.

what would be good to know is who makes these threaded hex bars in larger diameters than the standard 7/8. I really need something more like 1" or 1.125 for another project and cant find anything, even from offroad places.
