Anybody running a trailer hitch?

Wasn't sure if this was the right place to post so sorry if its not. But my uncle offered me a towbar and trailer hitch that he had dealer installed in 86 on his IROC. Now this made me laugh and I have no intentions of driving around with a trailer hitch on my baby whatsoever but just got me thinking and id like to know if anybody else is and also what exactly would you guys be pullin in one of these things lol and if anybodys got pics so I can actually see what it looks like thanks

Re: Anybody running a trailer hitch?

The 1987 Pontiac Formula 350 I just bought has a hitch on the rear. Its not a ball style though.
A van I bought last year has the same style on it as well. Its a open rectangular slot that a pin goes through to hold the trailer.
I will post pics when I can.
Looks like it was installed professionally.

Re: Anybody running a trailer hitch?

When I upgraded my old 1983 Honda Civic to a 92 R/S, I thought: "Cool, I got a nice big V8. If I get a boat, I can tow it now." Of course I never tried such a thing and quickly realized how ridiculous the idea was. I later got a truck with a beefed up towing package, even though I still don't have that boat. :/

That being said, it would be cool to take the motor/trans/drivetrain from say, a wrecked late model Silverado HD and drop it in a third gen. Those trucks have like 450 foot-pounds of torque. Could you imagine that torque in a 3500 LB third gen? Block long wheelies?

Re: Anybody running a trailer hitch?

There is one use for a receiver hitch (the square kind, not the ball) on a third gen: For installing a bicycle carrier. I have always wanted to be able to take a bike or two with me but none of the standard strap on bike carriers work on a third gen.

There are few cooler ways to show up to the local skatepark/BMX track/boardwalk than in a third gen.

Be very afraid! Our local Giant grocery store sells a home-brewing kit for about $15. Cheaper than a case of Budweiser and the beer is much better!

Re: Anybody running a trailer hitch?

Jimmy I know for a fact that they were offered as a dealer option like louvers and mudflaps. All three things probably consider w/t by a good portion of people.

There's a guy doing a duramax swap on here check it out mjwadams.

And on the beer thing lol those grocery store kits are usually Mr. Beer which is cheap and very easy and can be good its not really like you're making it yourself, more like pour in a can and watch what happens lol. I brew everything on my own except I use malt extract to make it easier and let it ferminet in big ol glass carboys. Try to get about 20 gallons every 5 months or so. Usually costs around 50 bucks for all that. Gets to be a real pain in the butt but its so much better tasting than anything you can buy, and so much cheaper too

Re: Anybody running a trailer hitch?

cant remember where i saw it but some ppl use the hitch for very small trailers that can hold 4 tires to swap at an autox or road coarse event which is a pretty good idea to tow ur tires and a jack instead of getting someone to follow u to an event

found the link>>>> https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/fabr...s-trailer.html

Re: Anybody running a trailer hitch?

Had one on our 85 24Hrs. of Lemons car, left it on in case we got rear ended, it was one of those flat receiver stiles which would be good for a dirt bike trailer also.

It's in the scrap pile now, were trying to save weight.

The towing capacity on my 89 is right at 1000lbs according to the owners manual. That'd take care of most towing needs for any of us. Theres nothing wrong at all with towing your bass boat with a Camaro.

Because our cars are unibody construction and only have a 2000 lb tow rating and 200 lb tongue weight rating.

I installed a Draw-Tite hitch on my 90 'vert years ago. I towed my HiLo travel trailer and a trailer with two 3-person WaveRunners. To keep the tongue weight below 200 lbs when towing I'd have to remove the propane tank from the front of the trailer and stow it inside the trailer in a storage compartment just behind the rear axle.

I retired the 'vert from towing duties in 94 when I bought my first Dodge Ram.

That is the Draw-tite Sportframe hitch receiver. I bought it thru U-Haul years ago. Unfortunately Draw-tite discontinued it. They still sell a hitch for our cars called the Sportframe, but it is not the rectangular low-profile design. It is now the square design.

By the way, you are missing the plastic cover that keeps the weather off of it and makes it look prettier when not in use.

i have a trailer hitch on mine, class 1 flat bar type. its great for towing my little three rail trailer with a few motorcycles on it. Anything more than that probably wouldn't be too much fun.

I found a stamping on the top of the hitch.
Draw-Tite for sure! Ratings and everything on there.

My Dad actually has a trailer with the same style hitch.

Funny thing is when he bought the trailer ($10 lol) we had never seen that style before. Now I have a mini-van and a Firebird with that style!

When I got my first 86 TA it had recently had a hitch removed.it had apparently done some damage, the rear frame rails were cracked and rear springs flattened. Still had the wiring pigtail.

Last night I was talking to my dad and apparently he used to take his horses to team ropings (kinda like a rodeo event) pulled by his 79 Trans Am. I thought all this was funny but never thought I actually knew anybody who did it lol he said he might be able to find some old pics

Re: Anybody running a trailer hitch?

I have a hitch on my 8 sec '85 procharged TA. I pull an all aluminum trailer on drag week. I cut a hole behind the license plate, installed a camaro flip-down plate bracket. The mount is custom and I use it for either my parachute or intall a reciever. I will post a pic later.

Looks like I'm still the last word on ultimate towing with a third gen. Y'all have fun, I've towed 4,500# with my '91 RS LO3 with no problems, and I gooseneck-hitched more than that to my '84 T/A. Do a search, it's fun viewing.

Re: Anybody running a trailer hitch?

I had a hitch on my old IROC and used it to haul tires and tools to the track.
Then I pulled a u-haul across Canada and the US from Toronto, south of Lake Superior, through North Dakota and then across the Canadian prarie.
3000 miles/4500 kms.
The lock up in the my convertor had failed, rpms were seldom below 3000, engine temps were 240 and I was forced into regular fuel in the US northern states (10:1 CR with iron heads). That was the late summer. Nice and warm too.
I made it, the trailer made it, the engine gave up a rod bearing the following spring.

Put a hitch on mine to tow a U-Haul from LA to Bozeman. Only time I ever used it. Terrible trip. At 62 mph, the trailer would start dancing, big time.
Sturdy hitch. Finally was cut off the car last Summer. Hooray!

So you're blaming the car for one bad experience? Guys, a hitch makes a great attachment point for when the car needs to be moved but can't be moved under it's own power. It's not that heavy, it's not that high, it's not that far behind the axle, and it's not on the heavy end of the car. Bragging about removing it? Seriously? Even if you have a big rig and a 1-ton dually, leave your hitches on.

No blame, just relating my experience. Terrible trailer.
Actually, I just remembered towing my race car (see avatar) with it once, and it did fine. So I used the hitch twice in 15+ years.
Do have a 4x4 T-100.... with a hitch. Do without on my 'bird. Each to their own.
