Blown shocks and struts, advice?

hey everyone

My 92 RS 'vert rides extremely rough, everywhere. It would bounce for a block straight when I hit a pothole. I drove it around for 3 weeks straight, and then drove my Tahoe with an air suspension system. WOW!I felt the difference. Since then I've realized my shocks and struts are blown, my tires are dry rotted, and generally in bad condition. I will be getting subframe connectors in the near future, I just got new tires. It rides better but still rough. What shock/strut/coilover/springs etc combo would give me the best stance, ride and performance? Looking on a budget here, so coilovers with QA1 on spohns website is out of the question. Thanks alot!

For shocks, ANYTHING new (well, almost anything) will ride better than 200k mile OE.

Yerbasic Monroe SensaTrac type stuff is OK for just a driver.

Avoid Gabriel. Garbage of the lowest order.

KYB is another relatively low-cost but half-decent option for such a situation.

BILSTEIN is the only word in shocks. You can send them back to the factory and they will rebuild them for you from mild to wild.

Ya know abray, I've noticed your recent posts on this board. You seem to have incredibly strong opinions that seem to have no basis in reality. It really doesn't help anyone to spout your opinions as fact. Why don't you tell the OP why you think they are so great.

Second, Bilstein is certainly not the only word in shocks. There are many great shock brands out there.

Finally, the OP asked for budget shocks. Bilsteins are not considered budget by most of the folks here.

Re: Blown shocks and struts, advice?

Glad you asked, I saw a show a few years ago on shocks and they toured a few shops including monroe, koni, Bilstein and a few others. Bilstein was way ahead on technology and there machining. Bilstein is used by nascar and many other high end racing forums. Bilstein will even let you send your shocks (and struts) in and they will rebuild them for you. I know, I called them. Very few companies of any product will rebuild the product for you since they want to sell you a new one or in most cases it is not worth rebuilding. I know a lawyer who has a multi-million dollar lawsuit with Firestone and he knows tires and he explained to me why Micheline tires are the best. He has invested years of his life to this lawsuit having to prove his position in a court of law and I have complete faith in what he says. I recently obtained a 89 corvette starter since I have been having starter trouble and have a new (rebuilt) factory starter (ac) as well as some other starters and the corvette gear reduction starter was clearly the best starter. This took a few days but the vette starter never bogged and spun the motor better than the other starters. I have done several months research on cooling fans and the rock crawler people, vette club people, hot rod people all say the taurus fan is by far the best so I bought one and it kept my car cooler than all the rest. It was clearly far superior to the other fans I have tried. This is how I have formulated my opinion. The last set of Bilsteins I bought was used on-line and was cheaper than a new set of KYB shocks. Plus you can send them in and get them rebuilt quit reasonably. I hope I have cleared up any confusion you may have had. I don't pick things based on the prettiest color like some poeple do.

Re: Blown shocks and struts, advice?

87350iroc, I have posted a few times in the tuning section wanting info on tuning and how much duration you can get away with on a 350 and it still be very street driveable and easy to tune. This I do not know a thing about and cannot get anyone to respond back to me so if you know anything or anyone who tunes or has experience in this I need to know how much duration @50 you can run in a 350 with 10 to 1 comp and a HSR and it idle good at 750rpm or lower.

Re: Blown shocks and struts, advice?

Sorry to hear that. I have a spare red front cap off of a wrecked 91 Z28 but I live in Arkansas. This car was hit in both doors so the nose and rear are good.
