Options to cushion a rough ride
Options to cushion a rough ride
Since I bought my 84 Trans Am I replaced the wheels with the OEM 205's which are not low profile in any way and double checked to make sure the air pressure was right. The problem is when I drive it, it still rides pretty firm to where I feel every little bump in the road, almost like the tire pressure is too high. I pushed down on all four ends and the shocks seemed pretty firm and when I had it in for the tires the guy said the shocks seemed like they were in good shape. I'm not sure if they're OEM shocks or a more firm performance shock, but I'd like to do something to make the ride a little softer and not so harsh. I'm not looking for a ride like a cadillac but I'd like to not get jostled around so much. Is there something in the suspension I should look for that could be worn and causing such a stiff ride? I can't imagine the ride was this rough when it was new. I had a 69 Cougar that had a much softer ride so I figure there has to be something I can do to help the ride. Any help, tips or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

What size wheels and tires?
How long have you had the car?
How many miles?
New struts and shocks would be where I would start in terns of ride quality.
Good bushings, and rear control arms can also make quite a difference.

Being a trans am, it would have stiff springs.
You could replace them with lower rate base model springs.

Stop complaining about your trans am riding rough and buy a BMW. I'm amazed at the amount of people on here complaining about ride quality....

Re: Options to cushion a rough ride
It has just over 95,000 miles and I've had it about a month. The wheels are 14 inch wheels and I'm running 205-70 14's with 28 psi. Since I'm planning on driving this almost everyday as a daily driver and cruising and not looking to either race it or take exit ramps at 70mph, I don't need a stiff performance type ride. If anyone has a suggestion for replacement springs or struts I'd appreciate it. Thanks for the info!

Buy the best struts and shocks you can afford.
Cheapest to consider would be KYB GR-2 fronts and gas adjust rears, or KYB AGX, Tokicos, Bilsteins or Konis.
Just go to the parts store and get new Moog springs for a V6 model.
Replace all suspension bushings with new, after all they are 30 years old now.
