I have been searching for a while but cannot find out how to determine what steering box I have. Is there a code stamped on the box?

I have an 87 Camaro Z28 with the stock box. RPO codes where removed by previous owner.

 

There was a 2-letter code stamped in ink on the box. It is on the end that is opposite the input shaft, and it is on the top cover (with the 4-bolts). However, the ink comes off very easy, so many times it no longer exists.

Which is unfortunate as otherwise need to pull the box apart to ID it.

Its likely going to be the normal ratio box, and not the quick ratio boxes that came equipped on the more high option cars.

I have a Lee's 670 gear now, but still have the quick ratio box for my TransAM, but it needs to be adjusted, if not rebuilt entirely.

 

Cant you just count the input turn range? The slow ratio box is 3.5 turns lock to lock, and the fast ratio box is 2.5. It should be pretty close to one or the other, right?

 

How can I ID the box once it is taken apart?

 

Need to know what to look for, along with dimensions. The three main items are the thickness of the stops, the diameter of the torsion bar, and the ratio of the ball & worm rack.
