Powder coating -vs- POR-15 for SFC

I plan on ordering a set of Spohn SFC soon and am wondering what coating to go with. POR-15 will save me a couple bucks as opposed to ordering them with a powder coating but will it be just as strong?

Powdercoating is a good thing but I still think it burns off when you weld in the SFCs. Maybe it would be better to buy them without powder coating, install them, then use POR-15 on them.

i used por 15 on the whole underside of my car, just sprayed it with a paint gun. The stuff is virtually indestructible. I like the soulbounder's idea.

That's the reason why I asked. Just thought it was a waste since you have to grind it off for the welds anyways. Thanks guys

Me too 'm gonna buy Spohn's sfc's. You only grind where you weld... You should paint before installing because I don't think you can properly paint ALL the faces of the frame once installed...
Since I have to go to Spohn's to have them installed I'm gonna buy mines painted. After the welding I only have to paint the places were the welds are....
Just an oppinion...

Has anyone ever welded through POR-15 before? It's nice to coat the entire underbody of the car but you can't exactly coat the spots behind the SFCs if you install them first. Just something I was thinking about while reading this.

No you can't weld through anytype of coating, it must ground off to bare metal. I was planning on just painting the tops of the pieces that will be hidden by the floor pan leaving about a 1/4 inch strip on each side so that I can weld. Once I have them welded in place then I'll go back and paint the rest.
