Steering box - FE1 or not. Help needed.

Hi All -

Have a 91 RS w/the 305 and the steering has been ..well sloppy. Getting into a break upgrade, with some struts, mounts, etc - figured I'd replace the steering box.Not into rebuilding it. Looks like there's 2 - one for the FE1 Soft Ride, and one for the setup without. Links below at advance auto and summit (summit doesn't even spec out which is which ..which is frustrating but luckily its' the same as advance w/the same part number).

Not sure if my RPO codes even are still hanging around anymore on any panels - is there any other way to tell what I had stock. Or - were all RS's one v. the other? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't recall any RS or base model firebird of that time having anything other than the fe1(ie more turns lock to lock) box. To keep things exactly the same then the advance listing that shows 3+ turns lock to lock is the one you want. You can also swap to the 2.5-2.7 lock to lock unit and still work just fine. Steering effort will feel a bit harder but the precision is better. It's was a go to performance upgrade since the days they were new.

Thanks a bunch- poked around a few threads and couldn't find this info..I'm sure I missed it. I want the same feel on the steering - had the car 20 yrs now.

Counted turns..was at a little over 2.5. Perhaps someone has replaced it before I bought it. Altho I've had the car 20 yrs and about 45k miles.

It is possible it was switched. Either way I'd replace it with whatever matches whatever is in the car now and when a new box shows, count those turns too. Rebuild shops and vendors don't necessarily care if it matches the listing if it fits.
