Steering box rebuild vs new

So I have read posts on here of companies like TurnOne, Lee, & PowerSteering.com rebuilding stock steering boxes. Your box is back to new again, but how do they compare to Detroit Speed's new box? DS box is 12.7:1 and around $550. I know people are happy with their rebuilds, is the DS box a good option?

Borgeson is also a good option. I have a 12.7 on my car with a u-joint steering shaft and it's a fantastic setup.

Have you checked for a local rebuilder? That can also be a good option if you have a good local place.

There's a good rebuilder in st louis MO. Can't think of the name but they make you send the pump you'll be using as well.

I have a 600 series 12.7:1 PSC box that is over $1100 new...
Selling it used, about 500 miles, shipped for $500. I bought a much more expensive Lee 9:1 box is the reason I'm selling it...

Just some questions, I am not being ignorant or sarcastic as I am interested in your steering box.
DS box is $554, and new this is $1000. Are there any parts to this to make it that much more money? Is it built better or has other pros to it?
Also, by light steering, do you mean it's not as tight a feel to the steering wheel when driving?
You were just using your stock pump with it?

Thank you sir

Re: Steering box rebuild vs new

It's 1150 new.
Is the detroit one a 600 series?
That is smaller than the stock 800, lighter and I believe better tech inside.
The steering is tight, it's basically brand new, the "light" is it's a little easier to turn than stock. There is no play in the steering of the box.
Yes, stock pump, synthetic fluid.

Yes, stock pump, synthetic fluid.
It doesn't have which series it is listed, just that it can 'replace GM 600 and 800 series'.
I am interested in yours sir.

Re: Steering box rebuild vs new

Compare the pictures and see. The 600 is smaller than the 800. I think I looked at the Detroit one, and I don't believe it's a 600 series, I think this PSE was the least expensive 600 series I could find... One of the other companies you mentioned in your first post, I believe they were 16 or 1700, they looked a nice silver, probably powder coat, but they were also 600 series.

Re: Steering box rebuild vs new

I've used RedHead to rebuild a Factory 3rd gen 12.7:1 box.
Good option for street cars.
I've visited their shop in Auburn Washington and shot the sh*it with their tech guys.

I've also used a Turn1 8:1 (600) box in my race car.
Had it rebuilt 1 time due to excessive lash.
Sent it in again this year thinking it was sloppy again. But it was Dyno tested and lash free.
So something else is loose steering wise.
Weird because I replace the entire steering system every year.

I wouldn't hesitate to use readhead or T1 to rebuild a box .

I haven't used the DSE box.
But at $550 there's no way it's a quality unit.
That's just too low cost.
Holley has absolutely killed quality in all the companies they bought.
I avoid buying anything made by Holley for that reason.

Ok, I wondered about the DS unit, price looking lower compared to other choices. Good to know this info.

How does one order an 8:1 box from TURNONE? All they show on website is 12:1.

I recently bought a Rebuilt Steering Gear from Lee Power Steering.

It is a 12.0:1 Ratio 800 Series Box with multiple Bearing Upgrades, Circuit Upgrades, Billet Aluminum Covers, and Larger Stub-Shaft for $1,360.

Re: Steering box rebuild vs new

I used the DS on a customer car. Casting felt a little lighter than a stock unit quality seemed really good and felt great driving. Is it the same as a 1k box no cause your only paying $550 for it.
