TBI Mods

My brother just got a 91 RS with a 350 that has TBI on it. What can he do to the TBI to improve it. He planned on the Holley 400 system or something. Neither of us know TBI, so some help is needed. What about an aftermarket intake for it?

Single? Why not dual?

1. because the engine would get to use both bores not just 1 for each 4 cylidners
2. its cheap. $95
3. Its been said that you get better fuel distribution with single vs. dual but that hasn't been really confirmed.

Do the ultimate TBI mods to the throttle body, or you can buy my old one that has the mods already done to it. It wont make a big change but it will help.

I'm assuming the engine is the L05.

-Stock heads suck.

-Stock cam is wimpy.

-Exhaust is probably the tiny original 305 exhaust.

-Intake runners are horrible.

There's a list of things to do. Assuming the engine is all stock.

Tune up (oil, cap and rotor, wires), look at spark plugs, get a hold of a scanner or winaldl and advance your timing by 2 degrees (running 89 or better octane) until knock counts start to appear. Back off 2 degrees and see how you like it. You should feel a difference in the performance. Get an open element, make the fuel pressure adjustable and tune the car so that it feels the fastest and doesn't have any detonation (knock) and there you have it. A very solid stocker with the basics.
Headers are always good, you name it, TBI likes it, just like carb. The only difference is that the open element just seems to be as good if not better than the "cold air." Go figure. I guess you could remove the weatherstripping on the hood for that classic muscle car hot rod trick. I've done it, if anything, it's for sound and to cool down the motor. It does have it's own cowl effect so go ahead and do it.

Also.....

HEADS, HEADS, HEADS............. The single most important overlooked part of the engine block. A good port job on the heads, a 3-angle valve job, Better breathing intake and a chip in the ECM combined with Headers&Exhaust on the 350tbi should get you about 300-400 horse range depending on what you buy.
I left out bigger injectors, after 300hp, the stock 350 will lean out at high rpm, get a set of 454injectors , fuel pump, and a good fuel regulator.
All this should be obtainable (if you look) for under 1g.

Well, I wouldn't recommend dumping money into the stock heads. Well you could, but think about these scenarios:

You're hanging out of a window throwing money to crowds of people. Or maybe you're sitting in your living room and your fireplace needs kindling and you use your money. Or maybe you're walking down the street and you're tossing $100 bills into homeless people's hats. You get the idea.

I didn't mean stock heads

You can find a nice set of aftermarket heads on ebay or maybe even someone has them lying around in a garage somewhere that they would be willing to part with for next to nothing. I also don't think that the stock heads are worth anything. However, I do like cast heads better. They are cheaper and aren't going to warp if they get hot(like aluminum will). IF you are going to race this motor, wheather it be for fun or money, cast would be the way to go.

Ok, when I read your post I thought you were talking about the stock heads.

Yes I agree that you should go with Iron heads opposed to aluminum if you are going to put any kind of serious stress on the engine. Aluminum looks pretty, but in the end, cast is the way to go.

Sounds like a great combination. Just make sure you order a custom computer chip and tell them everything that you have. It'll definitely get you some good power. Sounds like the numbers 12 & 13 in a quarter are in your future. GOod Luck!!
