strang open element problem?

Hey guys,

My friend has an 88 Camaro convertible, it's 305 TBI... now he doesn't know much about modifications or anything so I pointed him to the Ultimate TBI articles.
Now he has the car running great wants to do the TBI open element. He already went out and bought the K&N filter for the stock housing (I believe 14 x 3")
Is there a part number he can buy the non-drop base thing for it so he can use the filter he has?
the parts store isn't helping him at all and everyone's telling him he has to buy a kit? if he does have to buy a kit, where/part# and how much?

thanks a million guys,

I bought a mr. gasket cheapo air cleaner for about $25 and punched out the opening to install the crankcase tube and drilled a hole for the( I don't know) sensor. This set-up did amazing things to my car as for power.

I dont think the stock filter fits in a open element casing. I belive i tried it for ----s and giggles awhile ago and it didnt work. They are cheap enough and common to find.

Yeah, you can pick up a Mr. Gasket chrome open element at Advance for $16.99 I believe. No kit needed. Just relocate the air temperature sensor to the flat base and you're good to go. The stock aircleaner does not take a 14X3 element, you will have to return the one you bought.

stock isn't 14"x3"

I measure my stock one a while back, it was wierd(like 12" or 13" by 2"). I was going to get a K&N open element top, but they don't make one in a STOCK size.

Chrome 11-1/2"x2-3/8" Air Cleaner.
Have one on my TBI S10 Blazer (used to be on my RS)
This one will fit the stock-size K&N Element (but doesn't have a flat bottom, so you'll still need a spacer)
Summit has 'em for 39.95 (MOR-66210)

you don' need a kit. i did the open air setup to my 91 TBI. its very simple. all you need is a non-drop base air filter housing and probably a drill. i took the crankcase tube and turned it 180 degrees (make sure you leave the breather filter in it). i used the drill to drill a hole in the base to put the air temp. sensor in and that was it. im going to make a cold air intake like the one in the Ultimate TBI mods. because the hot air from the engine bay and outside really does kill the car. you're in canada so you don't have to worry about that.
