Stupid Hypercrap chip
Stupid Hypercrap chip
I bought my 91 Camaro RS 305 TBI from my cousin a few years back. He said that he put a Hypertech chip in the computer. However I think he put the wrong chip because the car is running like crap even after I brought into the shop for a tune up. Is it possible for my Camaro to run like crap if it had the wrong chip?

Yes, it's very possible that he's using an eprom not made for the 8746 ecm. There are LOTS of ecm's that use the similar c3 type ecm's and their eproms are physically the same.
Find out what the chip is, either e-bay it or through it away and get a stock eprom in (if you're running stock) then advance the base timing until you get knock counts (winaldl works great, so does the expensive tools) then back off the timing 2 degrees.

Hey while you are talking about advanceing the timeing whats a generaly safe and decent # of degrees that can be advanced on most cars? Just wondering since i am always looking for something to do in my spare time. (which currently doesn't exsist with college move in comming up in 2 weeks)
thanks for help...but there is another problem...
I do not have the stock chip and I tried to order one from the dealer but they have three different chips 1)Federal Emissions 2) California Emissions 3)no specific Emissions. Is there a way that I can find out which is the right chip?

On a non modified tbi engine, most people can advance base timing between 4*to 8*. I have mine at 6* advance. Be sure to use premium gasoline if you do this.

What the....
Hell are you talking about, 4-8 degrees from the stock adjustment????Of 4-8 degrees of base timing??? Stock BTDC timing on L03 TBI's is 10 degrees, 12 runs the best, and 14 is plenty of off the line performance but it pulls a bit off the top end, from my experience, 12 degrees of base timing runs optimal, and you should always run at least 89 octane anyway, these motors have 9.3:1 compression.

Stock timing on an LO3 is 0 degrees. I ran 8 degrees when my engine was stock on 92 octane with no pinging.
Now I did the ol turn it till it pings and back it off a lil method because I was pissed at my trap speeds at the track. lol, way to be level headed Chuck.

Now i am slightly confuse since i have had to teach myself alot about cars on my own (tv, the net, books, other people, ect) so my knowledge has holes here and there. What does BTDC stand for exactly because its kind of confuseing me.
