Cam Selection

hey guys, I finally found a connection with a mechanic who has a shop that he can do work on my car for cheap. Now, I asked him about putting in an LT1 cam and he said it would freak the computer out too much and I'm guessing this may be incorrect but if he thinks it will then he's not going to do the work. He mentioned that an aftermarket cam company sells cams for computer controlled cars that come with computer chips programmed for the cam your buying. Is this true, if so does anyone know what they are?

LT1 cam will not freak out the computer. The only cam I know of that you can get a chip for is the wimpy edelbrock cam when you get the entire edelbrock package and then you only get the chip for the 1227747 Truck computer not the one for the car.

Get the lt1 cam and grind the dowel off yourself and tell him its a performance cam from a Z28 camaro and don't mention LT1.

An LT1 cam alone wont freak out the computer. If you just up your fuel pressure you'll be fine. Granted a custom chip is always a good idea for optimal gains after cam, heads and/or intake, but you'll be OK without it.

Yeah guys thats exactly what I was thinking. I had suggested the cam to him and said that it would work just fine in it because of its higher lobe separation, but he says it won't and I'm afraid he won't install it if he doesn't personally think it will work, for liability reasons. I'm in quite the dilemma here. My other thought was just to skip that now and have him install gears and posi. Can I get like 3.55 gears in my car?

Gear choices are 3.42 and 3.73 in that general area. Both are good gears. I run 3.42's since most of my driving is hwy and not dragstrip.

1. if your car is bone stock, then wait on the LT1 cam

2. complete exhaust replacement and gears (posi too if you can) should come before cam swap.

3. Change the intake while you have it off for cam replacement.

This will yield the most enjoyment out of modifiying your car.

Ok, thanks for the advice, my car is a 91 5-speed with just an open element and flowmaster catback. The reason I threw 3.55 out there is because I would've like a little more than 3.42 but I figure I dont have the horses to back up 3.73's so if you guys think 3.42's would be best I'll probably go with that.

With a 5-speed I'd run 3.73 gears. Fun fun fun
