I want to attempt the Ultimate TBI mods
But I would prefer to do so on a spare unit.

A) So I can still drive if I dont get ti done right away
B) (More likely) in case I totally hose it up.

Where might I find a good deal on such a beast?
More importantly, what is a fair price to pay?
I'm seeing em for under $100, I can't see paying more
than maybe $25-40 for a used one.

Maybe I should hike out to UWrenchIt ?

 

the tbi that coomes on our cars was used on most chevy trucks of the same years. i used one off of an 89 camaro the only difference i found in the 89 and 92 was the pigtail on the TPS i had to wire the pigtail which i bought at the local autozone goodluck

Yes, apparently most GM TBIs are identical except for that
one sensor's pigtail shape. (Round vs flat)

5.0 and 5.7 V8, as well as 4.3 V6 (4.3? hmmm...I know its 4-something) all used the same TBI. I've heard 'em going for as little as $15 from a junkyard, guess it all depends on where you are. But I'd say certainly less than 50...
