Removing A.I.R. System
Removing A.I.R. System
I was wondering if it would hurt to just route the belt to remove the smog pump....
BUT leave the actual smog pump on the car, just simply by-pass it on the serpentine system...
Will this cause any harm??

it would be "fine" to do as it would not hurt the engine, but there are two reasons for doing that mod and you would only be getting the effect of one: 1.) to keep the recirculated air out of the engine (that you would have) and 2.) to regain the 5-10% of horsepower lost by having the motor run the smog pump (that you obviously wouldn't gain)

In my opinion, the only reason to remove the smog pump is simply for a cleaner engine bay. You will not feel or see any improvement in performance. I think the pump only runs whike your car is warming up anyways. Weight savings of are very minimal as well, maybe 10-15lbs tops, I can't remember. It is nice not having those darn hoses though.

Well i'm doing it because
1. To save the weight from the front of the car....
2. To reduce the amount of junk in there....
3. I don't have Emissions in my state.....:lala: :lala: :lala:

Sounds good. It will definetely get rid of a lot of the junk in the engine bay. Your first step to making your engine look as sweet as the rest of your car

Maybe I can save you $$ and time
I see you live in florida, so listen to this. If you plan on driving your camaro on the street, you better not get rid of the smog stuff. I live in Central Pennsylvania and my state just adopted a federal regulation mandating visual inspections of factory pollution control devices and tampering of them. So, I had to buy new headers, smog pump, the lines, a cat, and a few other hardware pieces. It was very expensive, like almost a grand for me to get all these things, just so I could pass a normal state inspection.
It is my understanding that the federal government has mandated that these inspections start over the next few years in all state, so save yourself the hassle and time and leave that stuff be.

this may help. not the best pic, but you can sort of see the routing.

Dewey, What kind of hood do you use with that open element e-brock? Just wondering, b/c it would seem to me that as hot as these motors get, (especially the headers) the air you would get without a cowl, shaker, or ram-air hood would be so hot that it wouldn't be much better than the stock snorkle with cooler air in it. Just wondering b/c I used to use an open element too, and I have seen .43-.50 second gains and 3-4mph goin to cai from an open element.

Heres the routing i thought up the other day in school. any reasons it wouldnt work? or i might run into problems?
i realize i MIGHT have to reverse the belt tensioner... but other than that i think it will be the simplest belt re-routing...

RS,
I have the stock hood. BUT i have very carefully and cleaverly directed cold air towards the intake, and opened up paths for hot air extractions
Adrenaline-- That would work. I have seen a couple of people do it. You do have to take apart the tensioner and reverse it.
