Questions on putting on an open air filter.

I have a 92 camaro RS with a 305 TBI, I keep going back and forth to summit racing to try to find an open air cleaner that fits. I cant find one.Any suggestions on what to use for an open air element, and other ideas for good mods.

i have the same car as you. i went to autozone and bought a 14" open element. i believe its a NON DROP BASE. it was like $15 and then i bought a 14x3" K&N air cleaner. sounds wicked when u rev it up...sucking in the air and all.

Ahh, memories. My very first post on this forum was about open elements. I got mine from AutoZone for $29.99 (14x3 Edelbrock) Check out the link to my thread. Could offer some useful information, and some things you may want to read before you put one on!

If your hood did not close you probably need to remove the gold ring that lifts the air cleaner base about 1/2" maybe. Take that out if you're using a flat base air cleaner.

yep... removing the ring that sits on top of the tbi is what you gotta do... after that it's all good... first in MANY steps to having a decently fast 305 TBI... I started my car 2 years ago just like you ... now my 305 TBI is rumblin' past blastin over 300 HP, (but that's with a total rebuild, including cam/heads/ and intake... not to mention headers, chip, suspension work....) I just got fresh paint and rims too... MMMM-HHHMMMM

I put a 14" offset flat base open element on mine. I highly recommend the offset base. It clears the distributor nicely with a little extra room to spare. I bought mine from Summit and it was around $40 or so. It came with a k&n filter (5") and chrome cleaner. I should mention that the filter wasn't really a k&n it was a generic one. But it does clean out good and work like a k&n. Looks just like one too. I am enclosing a picture of my dirty engine compartment with it on.

Summit has the 3" one's too. It should fit fine under a stock hood.

I didn't get the drop base for mine and it works just fine! I have the 14x3 and I had to leave the spacer ring in for it to work and my hood shut just fine every time...

Ohh, don't mind the filter, I got too excited and forgot to put the K&N in before I took pics...

I tried some drop base's with 3" filters and the top of the cleaner housing hit on the top of my injectors. I was'nt sure if a 4" filter would fit with out hitting the hood so I got a 3" filter with a non drop base. And it has fir for about 9 years now.
