4th gen rear in a 3rd gen (pics)
I've been looking for a new rear end for my car as the 2.73 peg leg just isnt cutting it anymore. Im having a real hard time finding a complete rear that is a 3.42/3.73 posi thats out of a 3rd gen, either on TGO classifieds, or on ebay.
I have however come accross several 4th gen rears that fit my critiriea. now i know that they fit. And IIRC i read that they bolt right in. The only problem is that the wheels will stick about an inch and a half out on each side. that doesnt seem like that much to me, but i'd like to see some pics if anyone has any. also is there a way to remedy this 1.5 inch problem?
thanks,
-chuck

Get 4th gen wheels, thats what i did
Let me look and see if I have any, but I dont think I do. It's a direct bolt in, but I couldnt figure out the parking brake cables. When I get some time with the car I'll have to fix that.

ive got a 700R4 so the parking brake isnt the biggest deal. I cant imagine the design on that changed too much anyway.
Those pics would be great, especially if youve still got some w/ your thrid gen wheels on it. I've been looking for an excuse to buy new wheels and this may be it. But i really know nothing about tires and wheels and what not so thats another thing i'd have to research. I think backspacing is what im thinking about, is that the biggest difference on the wheeles in a 3rd/4th gen? that would be why the wheels will fit under the car even with a longer axel.
IDK, those pics would be great, thanks

I did it. Got a 98 z28 Rear on my 89 Trans Am. When the part comes in for my broken digital camera, I can get you a picture (been backordered for about a month now). There's plenty of guys on here that have them though. Try the drivetrain tech board.

I took the parking brake mounting bracket off the 98 to put on mine, when I get to it. It's spot welded in a million spots. Pain in the A$$.

yes, the 98's, but they are sitting on my desk still. The 89's have a ball on the end, and the 98's have a hook type deal. I had drum brakes, but I looked at the disc brake cables too.
Your welcome, I knew that pic was in there somewhere
