Car running hot!

Every since i installed my hedders a while back my car has been running hot. But there is one thing that makes me curious, during the hedder install i has crawling under the car and the black air damm thing was getting in my way so i took it off. Then i figured i didnt need it so i didnt put it back on. Could this be why? It runs hot constantly, even on the highway the needle just keeps going up and up and wont stop untill i switch the fan on. The cooling system is fine, i have a 160 degree stat in it and i never leaks fluid.

put the air dam on, that is used to deflect alot of air up to your radiator. Also make sure that you didnt accidentally disconnect the fan switch which is located in the passenger side head. This is something that if very comment when swapping headers (knocking out the fan switch wire).

You need the air dam on. Your fan should only switch on if your temps get to hot sitting still. Even if it is 100 out you car should be able to keep cool without the use of fans.

No, sorry that was probably confusing, the original fan switch isnt i use right now, i have a toggle switch in the car to switch it on and off. yes when i turn the fan on it cools down but sometimes i have to run it constantly. I will put the air damm back on and see if that helps. Thanks alot!!

The air dam is what directs on over radiator. Air doesn't come in from the nose hardly at all. Without the air dam the radiator is pretty much sitting there not cooling at all.

I have the same problem too. I have a 160 degree thermostat,a 185 degree fan switch, and I have replaced 2 sensors under the car, and the fan still doesnt come on automatically. I have to turn on the air compressor to cool it off; what the deal? I really need some help!!

What two wires did you replace? Does the fan just not come on? Are your overheating at highway drives or sitting still? You could have a burnt fan wire. I would trace the wires that go to the fan and make sure they are not split or broken in any spots.

A broken fan switch will do this. I broke mine when I did me header install and the fan would come on and stay on until I shut the car off.

You have to replace your fan switch. It is an 11/16 sized sensor on the passenger side head right under the exhaust manifold/header flange. You will have to drain the coolant out of th eblock or you will get very wet.

Well the drain plug on the radiator in on the lower passenger side of it. It is a plastic turny thingy for lack of a more technical term. However, after you do that you want to get the coolant out of the block. For this there is a plug that needs to come out on the block just under the driver side head.

If your standing in front of the car it'll be on the bottom left corner of the radiator (passenger side). You can see it really easily if you just look down there. It's just a lil' plastic screw that you should be able to remove by hand...

how hard is that to get to. just kinda glanced at it and it looked like it might be hard(i didnt spot it but i wasnt looking too hard) since the Ac compressor is there. should be easier now that the Smog pump is gone right?

My last camaro did the same thing, i replaced the fan motor and it wouldnt kick by itself, it would only turn on when i turn the a/c on. I thought my car was just a piece of junk but i helped my buddy switch his fan motor out, we got it all back together come to find out that it was doing the same thing and i think it still is to this day.

I got the fan switch out from underniehgt the car. I had to reach up pretty good and lay on my back but I got it out. Be prepared to hurt your hand. Taht copper has swelled over the years in that iron head and it is really in there. A quarter turn at a time is about all you can get out of it along with a nice line of bruises on your palm.

Yes do it when the car is cold or you will get burned. Not only from the coolant but your face begine pressed against the oil pan.

I did mine last night.
11/16? I'm looking at the socket I used right now, and its 13/16.
Shiftys making it sound worse than it is. I put the car on ramps, and I had plenty of room under there laying on a creeper. I used a short 3/8 ratchet with a deep socket, hold the swaybar so the nut turned instead of moving the damn creeper.
I didn't drain the coolent either, I just let the car cool, put a drain pain under there, rolled up my sleeves, pulled the old one and put the new one in, and its not leeking. My arm took a little bath but other than that no coolent on myself, and there was only a very small amount on the driveway, I lost 1/2 gallon or so, not too bad.
That didn't fix my problem though, still no fans. So i'm trying to figure out what the other sensor below it does, and if that could effect the fan, or if the one next to the thermostat does anything. For now though, I think i'm going to go wire tracing, everyones favorite.
This is one of the few things ive actually managed to do without busting up my hands, or hitting my head

it could be the relay, you might try grounding the relay and see if the fans kicks on.

My bad on the size goof. Glad you got it changed out. Mine was just really in there good and I really had to toruqe on it. I used an open ended wrench because of header tube clearance problems.

I cant remember the name of the two sensors i replaced; probably would help if i knew, lol. It only overheats if its sitting still, and the only thing that I can think of is a faulty wire somewhere... owell. Thanks guys

Relays maybie? Thats what someone told me today.
And just put in a fan switch for now, you need to either put in a switch to ground the wire going to the fan switch, or make a switch to cross the 2 wires that the AC uses to turn the fan on.
