TBI PROMs

If I don't get into PROM burning myself, I was wondering what company made the best PROMs for TBIs. I have seen Hypertech and Motorvation PROMs and I am just wondering who makes the best. Thanks in advance.

that would be an interesting survey. i think someone just posted howell did first for him and will reburn for free. see crate motor post. lake many of us here burn our own. it takes many attempts to get it right and i dont see how can be done well without at least 10 tries. there is always some area to improve upon so not uncommon to carry on for many many more. datalogging is a prerequisite of an improved burn. at a minimium you would have to datalog and share that info on each reburn with the so called pro. its fun besides.

Don't even bother with hypertech or any off the shelf chip. Your best bet is to data log your car and send the data to Ed Wright at fast chips or to Brian at www.tbichips.com.

From what I hear is really good with customers and will re-burn chips if they are way off. His stuff is good for those who just can't get into chip bruning right away.

I sent mine back just because im swapping my cam and agreed to reburn it for free. Great Guy. I do agree youll be alot better off once you learn to burn your own chips. For me my budget wont allow it so until I can afford it. TBI chips is my only bet.

I went to TBIChips.com and it seems like what I want. Just to make sure I understand, all I have to do is get the info from my stock computer and PROM, give him a list of my modifications, and pay him $54 (for the Stage 1 chip)! If that's all than I'm sold!

One more thing, it says on the website that with the Stage 1 chip you can use 87 octane as long as you have a cooler thermostat. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, I'm gonna buy a new chip ASAP!!!:lala:

Hmmm... I wonder what he does to them that requires the use of premium fuels. I personally would jsut data log on regular 87 and tell him specifically not to do anything crazy with the timing tables so it doesnt go into detonation. The extra couple horsepower isnt worth having to shell out a kidney at the pump to fuel up.

Agreed. Do not waste your money on a stageX ship of anytype. The will mess with your timing tables and they may cause your car to run lean and or get some knock counts. Just wait and data log and do it right.

I just bought a custom chip from Brian at TBIChips. It was $70 for a custom chip. It also comes with a 170* thermostat.

Just do some data logging and send it to him. He had mine done and in the mail to me in 1 day.

I will be putting it in this week end. Hope it solves my 17.6 1/4 mile problem.

Thats one of the things taht always made me a bit skeptical about mail order chips is that for some engines the tune is just miles off and only extensive hands on tuning can get things right. It took me hundreds of burns and alot of tinkering to get my engine from running like absolute puke to running like it should. For me a couple of burns wouldnt have done it. I would have ended up driving him to his wits end asking for reburns because its still not right. Assuming there are no other issues with your car, if he can get it into the mid to low 14's and run well on only a couple of burns, he might jsut make a believer out of me . Let us know how his chip works out.

I don't expect it to be perfect right off. But if it can solve a majority of the issues, I would like to learn how to do it. Then I will dial it in just right myself over time.

Yeah, Id get Brian to do as many reburns as necesary to get it roughed in. After that, you can rip the bin off his chip and use that as a base to continue tuning on your own.

As for how to do it, its all covered on the DIY-Prom board. Read the stickies and then rock out the search button. Jsut about everything imaginable has been covered over there.

after doing my own tuning first on the bone stock engine, then with headers, and now a cam.

i can tell you, there is NO way you can get a good tune from mail order, you can only guess so much. i had to make 10% changes in my fueling for just the headers. with the cam, i have had to change pretty much everything, from the values the o2 is targeting, to the VE tables, to the timing tables, ect.

How exactly do you data-log a PROM? I can't find that info on the PROM board. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

first you download winALDL from here:
http://www.winaldl.webhop.net/

on that page theres the link to download the program..
below that link is instructions to build a ALDL cable.

you can build the cable yourself for around $5 if you know how to solder...

or you can buy one online... on ebay they generally go for $40-50.... i sell them for $30, but im not really in biz with them, i just make them when people ask me to.

This is probably a dumb question, but do you need a laptop to burn your own chips?

You need a laptop to record the data onto the windows based program. Then you have to analysis that data on a computer and make your changes. The computer will be hooked to a burner that will make the changes. The rpom eraser is separate.

If your going to burn chips, get the moates adapter so you can use 28 pin eeprom/flash. Much better then those ancient 2732 chips.

Chip burning soon

I just got an ALDL/OBDI & OBDII Y-cable from http://www.akmcables.com. I have a laptop and plan on getting a chip burners & esaer. First I'm looking at getting the Pocket RomUlator II so I will be able to tune while going down the road. After I get the program right I'll burn it to a chip then. I think thats just neat as sh|t, huh?
