Tbi Chips

Has anyone had any problems with chips from this company. I put one in and keep on getting a code 51. I've checked to make sure it in all the way. I finally took it out and put the stock back in and now no codes. Whats up. I loved the HP I got from that, but when the ses light came on, it ran like crap, wouldn't idle at all.

You will find that the only way to get a chip right for your car is to burn it yourself. If you have the ability to use a copmuter, which you do since you posted this, you can burn your own. Off the shelf chips can only rough geuss your combo and cannot truly dial it in. It is a shot in the dark pretty much. You can call them and I do know that he is willing to do a couple of re-burns at no added cost. If you just cannot fathum burning your own you at least need to data log and send the data to a repuatble burner.

Check out the "new to TBI" thread at the top of the TBI forum. There is a few links about datalogging and what it does. It is pretty self explaitary and you hook a lap top to your ALDL port and monitor what your car is doing. With that data you can determine spark, fuel, etc etc....

This true. There is NO way that someone can fully optimise your tune without spending time with the car. Just last week I took my car, laptop and eprom programmer to a dyno and spent 1-1/2 hours working with the dyno operator. I picked up 60rwhp by changing the total timing at 100MAP/2800rpm and up by only 4 degrees! Anyone using a 'guessed' tune is probably missing out a quite a bit of grunt at the treads!
Ben.

Holy Crap!!! 60 RWHP????

Well, I've got a Cop Car chip to hold me over until I burn my own.

I was going to just take it to GMMG Inc and let them do it, since I know the guys down there, but if I were to do it myself, is the PROMINATOR the way to go? I've been reading about it a lot lately.

What is a code 51?

I have a chip in my car from TBIChips. It seems to be doing ok. But it is a custom chip. I logged some data and sent it to Brian and he burned a chip for me. I have since sent him more data and he sent me another chip that was better than the first one. Little by little it will get dialed in. Just gonna take time.

Yep, thats the way to sort out part-throttle fuelling so it drives nicely, but the only way to optimise WOT fuel and spark for max power is on a dyno...

G-tech or stopwatch is ok if you also have a WB O2. I don't like the idea of tuning WOT when you have no idea how lean it might be.
Still hard to beat a few hours on the dyno. Stationary testing is safer also ;-)

Everyone always says,"Yeah you need to get into chip burning yourself to really reach your potential."

Agreed.

But how in the hell are you supposed to get into chip burning if you have no way to test your performance?

I have no drag strip, and no dyno. So If I was burning my own chips how would I know if I was doing better or worse?

I think this can be said for a lot of people.

You determine your progress based on your data logging. Meaning you maximise timing and fuel without getting knock. Your data will show you that. A wide band will only enhance your tuning capabilities. Trust me you can tell.

Okay, but I still won't know if I'm making max horsepower or If I'm improving 1/4 times.

What is knock?

Getting the right tune and having the correct parameters for your set-up is GAURANRTEED to improve power numbers and ET's. You don't have to worry about track times until you are getting nidy griddy with the tiniest bit of tuning data. Then you will use track times to get every last parameter perfect. So this is what I mean. If you mod your car and data log and it says you are lean than you don't need to use track times to tell you that fixing that condition will improve the performance of your car. Do you get it? Example. If you know you are dehydrated you don't have to run a mile to tell you that your times will be slow and that you will be in pain.

Knock is premature fuel combustion caused by excessive heat, wrong ocatane, or improper timing. It sounds like marbles in a coffee can and is the worse thing you can do to an engine. The sound you hear is literally the cylider walls vibrating like a drum. Not all knock is audable and thats why you need the software.

your improved perf is determinable with a stopwatch or better yet a GTECH. i believe GTECH is accrurate. so a seach for in on specs on net. 2 types i recall that vary on function/rprice. not all of us have a track near buy to blast on. seat of pants is not reliable. as far as tuning goes i got into it since car flat out would not run after mods. kinda like i had no choice. . burn # 25 runs pretty good but not quite yet there.

Thanks for the info shifty. Now I get it. This has definatly convinced me to get into chip burning.

Close.

It is basically an accelerometer. But just like any accelerometer it is only as accurate as its calibration was. Tiny motions inside create voltages that are read. The high the voltage the higher the acceleration. Then it just computes velocity and time off of the testing duration. Because of that, they tend to be about 3-7mph off and anywhere from .3 to .5 sec off. It is a good tool to play with and get a general idea but should never be realied upon for true performance measuring.

Yeah, IIRC, they use piezoelectric transducers in them that generate a potential when a force is applied. I always wanted to get some lab grade sensors and make my own so I could have something as accurate as a track or a dyno but lab grade sensors are mad expensive.

Sounds like the eprom they used is going bad. Try and get the same calibration burned again. Its not uncommon for those old 2732's to kick the bucket.

Peizoelectric transducers are really cool but expensive. They use them to measure internal pressures when designing the inside of a motor. Cool stuff....

but arent they accurate in that they can tell you if you are improving things or getting worse? i would think if you do two runs approx 1/4 mile and they show 14.5 sec and then you burn a chip and run two more and they are 14.3 or both are 14.8 it should give you insight.

Well to an extent. You could also see a difference in times by not changing anything. It just depends on how you drive and road conctions and such. Even if you made two runs back to back, the G tech times could be different. If you see massive amounts of time dropping than you are making progress. A tenth here and there cannot be measure accurately enough to know if you are improving things.

Laptop? Who needs a laptop? I ran mine to my desktop using..speaker wire! At a mere 2400bps, long wire runs are just fine.
