I have done the open element on my 305 TBI. Do any of you guys know of a push in filter that will fit in the passenger side valve cover? Or is there a way to connect the metal tube that sticks out the passenger side valve cover into the bottom of the open element base? Like a size of the hose that would work?
The size of the hole is a puch in style 3/4". For now I just have gauze (sp?) wrapped around that tube with a band holding it on. It is very "jerri rigged" but will do until I am no longer lazy. With my emissions stuff in place it was hard to get any breather to fit in that small amount of space. Not that the AIR stuff is gone it is more opened up.

you can just put the stock one back in, just make sure that the little piece of wadding is still in it. If you look at the stock air filter assembly the breather is exposed to unfiltered air any way, so i dont see how running it with out it being mounted to the open element would be any different then it was stock. thats how mine is.

No it does breathe filtered air. The stock air cleaner assembly has that square filter built into the side of it where that tube plugs in.

You can put a 3/4" push-in style breather on your car, that is what I have and it is working fine. It looks a whole lot better than the stock one, especially when you have an open element.

I am using a K+N breather filter. I got it at Jegs.com. Mine is smaller than the one I found now looking at the catalog but it should definetely still fit. I wish I had gotten the bigger one, though, it only cost $1 more at the time!

The part number is 599-62-1160. It is 3" in diameter and 2.5" tall. It is $19.99

The part number for the one I bought according to K+N is 62-1030. It is 2" in diameter and is 1.5" tall.

Yes, you need 3/4" diameter filter. That measurement is for the bottom part that fits in the valve cover. My K+N breather filter looks like these:

I don't know about having high silicon or anything like that. I haven't had any problems with mine, although all I have is a K+N breather, not an engine filter (yet).

I've got the Mr. Gasket one in mine (3/4" one) and it works fine but I had to go the the Help section and buy a grommet that would fit. The one that came with the breather is like 1 1/16" and I couldn't get it to go in. Most all parts stores carry the Help line of products and you'll just have to go in and find the right one (sorry I threw my package away so I don't know the right #).

Yeah, I had to find a new grommet too and it took me a while to find the right size. And when I found the right size, it was still hard to get it in the hole!

So 3/4 inch is the correct size for the stock grommet? How snug is it?

Not very snug at all. A tighter grommet would be ideal.

i'd get a new gromet they arent expensive. I got one from autozone for like $2 and a disposible breather for about $6. when i tryed to remove the gromet in my cover it crumbled.

heres part numbers from autozone the gromet and the breather.

that one i have has a lip on it, its such a tight fit i used brake fluid to soften the gromet and to make it slick so i could push the silly thing in.

Sorry, i should have explained better.

Shifty is right it does breath filtered air. I pulled that little square thing right out of the stock cleaner and put it back on the tube. its only held on by like one or two little clips, no screws or anything fancy. Works fine for me. Its sad, i cant even dig up enough money to buy a $15 pretty one .

This may sound a little crazy but I cap off the breather hole in one valve cover and just put the pcv valve in the other. This puts a vacume on the crankcase. It helps stop leaks and blow by in my car. It really did cut down on oil consumption. You can actually hear the crankcase "blowdown" if you pull the pcv out of the valve cover with the car running. Unfortunately this setup has been masking the fact that my rings are on their way out. I just noticed the other day that i'm leaving a nice blue trail at upper revs under WOT (no manifold vacume) so It's time for a rebuild. I unhooked the pcv for a quick drive and man does it smoke alot without it. Has anyone else tried this?

I had to run around looking for one for mine. Autozone sells a spectra one that fits perfectly into the stock valve cover with the stock crommet. That is what I use.

I've only changed mine twice since I have had my motor. So each one has last like 3/4 of a year.
