Jet chip

Hi, I have a jet performance chip (Stage 2 PN: 18815-S). My car is a 1988 Chevy Camaro (305, TBI, manual, w/ac ). When I put the chip in along with a 160 deg. thermostat (I also have flowmaster exhaust, MSD distributor and coil, K&N intake (functional cowl hood)) my idle now will not drop from 2,000 rpms. It just sticks there all the way from cold to hot. My check engine light is now on also. I am not sure if this chip is supposed to raise the idle like that... Could it maybe be my idle control and not the chip. It seems to be fine with the stock chip in it (sometimes it does idle high but when it warms up in drops down). If you have any ideas I would really appreciate them, I have gotten some really got help in the past from everyone here. Thanks a lot

well i dont think the chip is supposed to do that to you...ive had both stage 1 and stage 2 jet chips and neither of which did this...I would personally reccomend to you that you get a chip burned form TBICHIPS or some other person who will CUSTOM BURN you a chip....JetChips work well for Open Air Elements and Mufflers and that is about it and even then they are not all that grand....you need something that knows everyhtign that you have on your motor so that it will maximize everyhting....

as for the SES Light....I would guess there is some sensor going berzerk on you or waht not that is also causing the high idle....to help you toruble shoot it....you can use the ghetto Paper Clip ECM Code Retreval Method....or Walmart sells a "tool" that oyu plug in and it does the same thing...and even comes wiht a book that tells you what each code means for like 15$....a firned of mine is selling a handy AutoXray tool for i think like 350$ if oyu would like that....Auto Zone also does ECM Diagnostics....just finding one for our style ECM is a bit difficult...most are 96+.....

as for past experience....I helped a friend with a edelbrock manifold swap on his 91 RS 305 and had issues getting the idle down....switched that senson that is on the TB Itself...i think its like Idle Air Control or Throtle Body Position Sensor...something i forget what its called but its on the pasenger side of the throttle body.....swapped that and ran excellent

good luck

umm i think like 30$but dont quote me on that one...i wouldnt pay more than 60 thou.....but it is well worth it....i had the jet stage 2 chip then bought a TBI chip forma friend of mine and all i can say is DAMN that was a noticeable difference and all i had done to mine was manifold, headers, 8mm wires, and a flowmaster....but when you are sporting a 305 any power you can get ahold of you go for!

expect to pay a little more then $30 www.tbichips.com look thru this site. as far as a custom chip goes i dont think you could go wrong. jet chips arent in any way comparable to a custom burnt chip, their chips are meant for a rather stock engine, meaning if you mod the shat out of it that chip is useless. if you do cam, heads, full exhaust, and induction mods etc., you may not see the difference because the mail order mass production chip is not tuned for your engine.

From your other thread it just sounds like its a bum chip. If the stock works then Id jsut use that with a 180 t-stat, or see if you can find someone to burn a chip with a lower temp threshold for closed loop. In the stock chip its set to ~165 deg F so you should try to stay above that. One thing I dont like about tbichips is that he adds extra timing in. Some motors will tolorate it but if it doesnt work youll have possible power loss and/or detonation and youll be stuck with a chip that doesnt quite work. The stock calibration, most of which will carry over to the custom prom, has verty aggressive anti-knock measures and will really slow the car down if it keeps running into detonation.

Well… I put the stock chip back in my car then whet down to the auto store. On the way my car stalled and wouldn’t stay fired up… I then put the jet chip back in and she started right up, idling @ 2000rpm. I drove it to a shop to look into the computer. They said that I have a wiring problem and they couldn’t look at it. It is now over at another shop so they can look into my wiring. What do you guys think about this one…?

you should have checked to see what SES code you were getting, that would probably give us an idea of what was wrong.

well I went to my car and tried to get the code but it wouldn't give me one. It just stayed solid... There must be some electrical problem right...?

Has anyone bought a chip from tbichips.com . If so, how do you go about telling him what you have done to your car. It doens't look like you do. Just wondering.

Thanks

Uh oh, sounds like its in limp home mode. If the SES jsut stays solid then the ecm isnt processing at all. Normally it would jump to the portion of the code on the rom thats used on initilization and it would either give one solitary blink (or eventually flash codes with the paper clip in the ALDL) or a steady flashing if the prom was bad. Nothing at all means its not doing squat and the cars just running off of the hardware.

One way to tell for sure is to turn the key to the on position. If the ECM is working properly the SES will flash once. No flash means that the computer may be bad or something is causing it not to operate properly.

i believe a new computer would be around $150 and thats if you turn your old one in as a core. You could probably find one at the junk yard or on ebay for pretty cheap.
