weird item

Hey All,

I was browsing Ebay looking for stuff for my car when I came across this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33550

Guy says its a 4bbl Carb that is computer controled. Is that just a pretty way of saying TBI?

no, it's a computer controlled carb. Came on lots of cars and trucks. It's nothing like FI though.

I have one of those in my garage collecting dust from a previous f-body. Its a relativly useless CC Q-Jet. If you could get it for a couple bucks it would be a good deal if it was a non-CC Q-Jet.

Oh ok. I always figured Carburators were mechanicaly driven instead of computer driven. I never knew they made a computer driven Carb.

It isn't completely computer driven either. Basically they have a couple sensors that the computer reads. I don't think they are completely computer controlled. I could be wrong tho.

There is but they are made for the expensive pro-jection kits and stuff.

I think some guy on here tried to get them to work but I don't think anyone has had any luck yet.

The item pictured is a Computer Controlled QuadraJet. Came stock on TONS of 80's GM vehicles.

They still act JUST LIKE A non computer controlled carb at WOT. The computer / sensors do NOTHING at WOT. So performance is not effected.

The CCC Q-Jet has a TPS ( throttle position sensor, tells the ECM how wide the throttle is opened ) a Mixture control solenoid, which helps regulate the air / fuel mix during part throttle driving to keep it as close to 14:1 as possible, by using readings that the O2 sensor gives the ECM.

As for useless?

One of my last project cars I built was a 408 powered '83 Monte Carlo w/ the CCC Q-Jet, headers, ZZ4 intake, fully smog legal, EGR, cat, everything. It ran low 12's and got decent mileage to boot.

As I stated before, the PERFORMANCE at WOT is the same as a normal Q-Jet with no computer control at all, so performance isn't effected.

Never implied that the CC Q-Jets where inhibited by the closed loop computer control, just that without the computer, harness, etc, its not of much use unless you already have a CCC setup.

in regards to the stock cc q-jet, they arent bad carbs, easy to upgrade with metering rods and hangers, computer stuff doesnt really get in the way of anything performance-wise, not a bad stock carb. only problem i have with them are the auto chokes, whereas they dont open till engine been running for like 20 minutes in warm weather which is pathetic. not to mention the choke light that was almost always on... in my opinion, tbi's are much better cause you dont hafta worry bout chokes opening or closing, they run smoother cold or hot (well mine does at least) and i floor it all the time and its gettin alot better gas mileage than my lg4 did, and that was 30 hp less. sure all the computer stuff can be in the way with adjustments, but its worth it. all i gotta do now is get rid of the 2.73....
