Smog Check Legallity of Open Element

I've read just about all the threads out there about how to put a open on right. Just one thing; how many of you have ran into problems with the smog Police about this mod? I know if wont affect the actuall smog numbers of the car, but I'm more worried about "factory appearence" issues. I remember when I lived in California, a shop wouldn't pass a guys truck because he didn't have the AIR system hooked up. They mentioned that it needed to be just as it left the factory. I'm not used to dealing with smog, seeing as my last cars were '72, '70, '72, and '68 respectivly. I just moved to Colorado from a non-smogging county in Nevada and I'm wondering what kind of crap I can expect from the smog Police if I do this swap. (Which I will eventually do anyway, and just keep my stock stuff for smogs only )

Thanks for the repiles.

you wont pass visual inspection, keep the stock air cleaner so that when smog testing comes around you can just throw in back on, it only takes like 5 minutes.

It depends on how picky they are. If your area is strict than i would leave the stock snorkel on there unitl you are done testing. You can put an open element on in less than 5 minutes. After you have done the install the swap between the open element and stock air cleaner assembly is seconds.

Sweetness. I'll throw it on there for the visual, and then back in the "needed for smog" box.

I live in VA and I had to put the stock one back on to pass visual inspection. Good thing I kept it.

Depends on who you know and how much extra it would cost you. But in only takes some 5 minutes or so to put the open air element on, so dont spend any bribary money because of the air cleaner.

Mine passed visual with it on there. Failed the sniffer, but passed visual they checked the AIR, cat, and brakes that it. Passed with a small crack in the windsheild too.

In the manual for my vacuume pump they say the diverter thing on the stock housing reduces hydrocarbons. I don't know how much I trust that info though

I love it here in Georgia, you can have no working lights (literally, they don't check) a windshield that's half missing, but as long as you pass emissions output, you're good to go.
