high idle

Ok, when I first start my car, it idles high, aboout 17-1800. after about 5 minutes it drops to about 1000 and stays there. What are some of the things that cause this?

Its normal to idle a little higher until it warms up. 1,000 rpm is still a little high, but factory tachs are known to be crap, so make sure your tach is correct first.

Ok, just saw your post about the aftermarket tach..... Anyways, check your IAC to begin with. Your throttle cable could be sticking a little as well, or the blades are not closing all the way. Sea Foam works wonders also, it will help clean out carbon build up.

1000 at idle when warm is kinda high, mine idles at 500. Did you mess with the throttle stop screw on the TB.

I'm from Newark, maybe 10 minutes from hockession if you ever want to get together with some f-body people check out www.firststatefbody.com

On a technical note could the MAP cause his problem?

My 305 idles pretty high at cold start up. Eventually it comes down to 500-600 range when the engine warms. To be honest the car is still pretty new to me so I don't know what it should be.

Passenger side of your TBI unit, it's screwed into the base. It's got a plug into it and is basically a pintle that is opened and closed to let more or less air into the engine without cracking the throttle blades open.

Sea Foam does wonders. It is a fuel system cleaner, as well as a carbon cleaner, which is what I like to use it for. Basically it helps clean vavles and exhaust ports of carbon buildup and the like. It can also be used in the crankcase, though I'm not a big fan of using any "cleaners" in my oil, but that is just me.

Damn! I am lazy. It's amazing what a Google search will do:

SeaFoam Articel

So how's the weather south of Atlanta? Thanks for the scoop. Now I just have to locate where to buy this stuff on the Bay Area peninsula.
