Why don't we just.....
Ok i've read all the threads on open element and no one has come up with the idea(or actually done it) of running tubing from the front of the car (ram air) and have the tubing pointed at the open element. This way you get the best of both worlds, an air filter that can breathe an unlimited amount of air, and with some tubing from say home depot...you can give it some colder air as well....this is so simple why hasn't anyone done it yet???

The engine takes in ALOT of air at WOT. A small trickle of air wont make too much difference. Better off with boxed off cowl induction or something
exactly... open element is 360* of airflow, even if you put two 3" ducts of ambient air into the engine bay, its still pulling in a LOT more air than those little ducts can give out. might as well do a dual snorkel...

dark wolf summed it up. Theres a place called ram air box that sells a piece that goes over your open element. I has an open tubing so you can funnel air into the open element and put one end up again a ram air opening.
I fabbed one based on their design but i dont have a ram air hood yet. Ill grab some pics of it if i ever get my cam fixed.
meanwhile heres a pic...

Im not sure if I remember correctly, But I think its tricky with T/A's because the area in front of the radiator support will not accept the TPI intake box. I hollowed out the TPI air box by cutting out the areas that the two air filters sat in, and then made a sealed ram air duct by closing in the area below the box with fabricated sheet metal in the form of a ram air scoop. Then all you do is angle the intake elbow of your airbox toward the front of the motor, then figure out what you want to use to fit in between the elbow and the tpi duct.

seems to me like a huge waste of time (your "before" picture), Darkwolf... that stock intake is dreadfully restricting. Glad you cleared it up.

Do a search under my user name, and you will find not only pics of my set-up, but time slips comparing my ram air vs. open element as well. Also, I did not use the restrictive stock intake piece, but rather a caddy tbi with a much larger opening.
The bottom line in my opinion (having done it) is that ram air/cold air is just not worth it. It clutters the engine bay, requires extra money(albiet not a lot), and just doesn't look as nice as a shiny open element.

Ya know I have seen a lot of pictures of that set up from Ram Air Box but I have never seen one on the car. Is anyone actually running the Ram Air Box and can post a picture?

In that picture I ghetto rigged the seal using a metal cap from a rubber cement can. Since then I have fabricated a much cleaner looking setup.
In response to Tokens comment, what part of my intake were you talking about. And what would you do to improve upon it??

I have a "ram air box" setup for my bird but its not installed due to fund shortage for a ram air hood. Im using the bolts from the plastic piece over the engine fan to bolt up a funnel which connects to 3" pipe feeding the air box around my open element. Its clamped togethor with a 3" exhaust band style clamp to keep it clean.
Im in michigan currently so I dont have access to my formula down south.
