Question About Lt1 Cam

Hello,

I was just recently surfing the classifieds and came across this psot

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...=%2Blt1+%2Bcam

And was wondering do I need all of that in order to complete the swap? I figured all I needed was the cam itself along with the valvesprings. Do i actually need the rocker arms and the pushrods? If I don't, would it be a good idea to just buy everything he is selling or will it all not fit?

Thank you,
Steve

You don't need the rocker arms or pusrods. You can re-use your stockers. You will need a new timing chain set as well as matching valve springs for that cam. Look at the stickies above for all your LT1 cam info.

are new springs and timing chain needed if the heads were just done and the engine rebuilt?

How old is the timing chain? If it is pretty new you could get buy with the same one. That is provided that it was new when they did the re-build. If you have 30K+ on the new rebuild I would get a new chain. They are $45 for a whole new kit. Valve springs need to be matched to the cam. Age doesn't dictate application but you need ones that are tailored to perform the way the cam will excersize them.

I thought that this would be a good time to remind everyone to stay away from the K-Motion junk valve springs. I bought these and installed them before I heard anything about the troubles with them. (Installed 1999)

I'd stay away from cheap valvsprings in general. My machine shop told me that his suppliers says all the cheaper "z-28" springs out there come from the same factory overseas and don't get put into their respective boxes till they get here in the states (read: they are all the same). I had the same thing happen with a set of no name springs. I got the correct comp springs and actually picked up quite a bit of top end by just having the right spring pressure.

I rebuilt it, so I know the chain was brand new. it has less than 5k on it. Ok, so I guess I'll have to find some new springs if I do the swap.

Hey shifty,

Would the stock LT1 springs from a 35k LT1 95 Camaro work with my TBI?

Also, since I'm buying the entire set, would the rockers, pushrods, and everything I don't need even fit? I don't think it will but i guess it wouldn't hurt to ask. And honestly, I trust you the most right now shifty, I did read your FAQ and I read it almost everyday to try understand it, but it didn't mention replacing the rockers or pushrods so I was just wondering.

Thanks alot guys, I appreciate the help!

You can keep your stock rocker arms, lifters and pushrods. There is no need to replace them providing they are in good shape and not damaged in any way. I would not use used springs at all. Even with the low mileage. Stock GM springs aren't that great anyways and you could be playing with fire. Springs are cheap and $50 or less can save you a big headache or disaster in the future.

I know, it's just that the guy offered me $100 for the whole set. But if you think it's not a good idea then i'll trust you.

EDIT: If I do get it, anybody wanna buy pushrods, rocker arms, and valve springs from a 95 Camaro?

Going deeper, what happens if your valve springs end up breaking? I'm not really sure how to install them and this newbie is looking for every bit of advice and help he can get before he tears his motor apart.

Anybody have any FAQ's or walkthroughs on Valve spring installation?

On flat tappet set-ups yes, on rollers no. As long as the lifter is not shot and the roller spins freely you can re-use them.

Just a note I have run Elgin pn ELI.RV943X Max lift 490 seat pressure/Installed height 110 @ 1.700
open pressure/Height 285@1.210
Coil Bind 1.16
coast is like less than $1 a piece, not the best for a roller with the larger lifter wieght but I 3 motors with mild cams in them and no problem one of them is going on 50k miles.
