Thoughts on a TBI LS1
Thoughts on a TBI LS1
Has anyone tinkered with TBI on an LS1 style motor using one of those edelbrock LS1 carb intakes? Though the intake is expensive, it seems doable. As a 91 Caprice driver I'd love to do something like this and get a leg up on the 94-96 LT1 Caprice/Impala crowd or just pick me up a cheap third gen and drop one in there. I haven't done any research, but it seems one could make an LS1 swap almost a bolt in affair, except for the tuning of course. I'd love to blaze that trail for all of us, but alas I just got my L05 swap done so It looks like I'll be following the vortec head crowd.

my thoughts are if you've got the cash to drop on an LS1 then you're prolly going to keep its induction system, unless it doesnt come with one, in which case you're spending the money for the LS1 why not put a more effective (read expencieve) induction system on it. Even if you were to TBI it, most people seem to think that 300-330 hp is about the highest you want to go with 2bbl tbi systems. In which case we're looking at a totally custom job, or a holley 4bbl system.

Id run tbi on it, but thats only to show that I could. teh only thing I dont know is what youd do is with the ignition. I have mixed feelings about the box they include. The ecm most likely has much more functionality and is more flexible then the box. Then again, you could do alot with a fuel only system. Youd have 2x the time to run the fuel code.

I have joked about this set-up for a few years now with my TBI buddies. We joke because it is a terrible idea (no offense). I don't think it would be a wise idea to hold back such a monster. In fact, if anyone really wants to run TBI on an LS1 they should be punched in the gut. I don't even like the though of carbs on those motors. It just isn't worth it. You throw away all the expensive features that you pay for on that motor when you change the induction.

i think the ignition thing can be overcome. i was talking with jprevost not along ago and he had mentioned wanting to put coil packs on his car.
i don't know how far he has gone into research adn development, but from teh way he talked about it there are ways.

Just not a good idea! you'd want the LS1 to produce atleast stock hp.... why would you want to do that? that would defeat the purpose of puting it in your car!
Yeah, you are all right...But if one got a screaming deal on one of the lesser LS v8's (like the 4.8 or 5.3), I am not so sure it'd be a bad idea. Those are getting fairly cheap and thanks to trucks becoming fairly plentiful.
