The fuel pump supplies a fixed amount of fuiel at all times. When poeple do the LT1 cam swap they somtimes find that the stock pump cannot supply enough guel for the WOT fuel demands of the motor. They therefore upgrade fuel pumps. The way that they can tell if they are rich or lean is through chip work. The ECM and the paraemters in teh chip are what determin how thse engines use the fuel. The reason why your car will run rich/lean with an LT1 cam swap is because you are using the stock parameters in teh chip. Those parameters are set up to run a 170hp engine at a certian VE with certian fuel and spark valuse. Changing the cam requires changes to the chip in order to run the way it should with a new cam. You can barely bandaid the problem by manually adjusting the fuel pressure at the regulator but the only way to have the proper fueling for your motor is through chip work. In the end you will use the ECM to tell you if you need more/less fuel with larger injectors/fuel pump.

thanks for the informationa i'll keep this in mind once i begin the cam swap but with the ECM i could burn my own chip correct ?
or will i have to have someone burn a custom chip for me
ive also heard that the lt1 cam is missing the fuel pump lobe on the cam thats the main reason im asking this question

You can burn your own chip if you have a burnner, editer etc, it takes time but its well worth it, you can get someone to burn a custom chip for you but its not going to be as good since no ones there data loging or seeing what your car needs, i like to call them "hit or miss chips" there is no fuel pump lobe

Our cars have electric fuel pumps, so there is no need for a fuel pump lobe on the cam.

True but they (TBI) also had a fuel pump lobe. If you converted to a carb set-up you could use a mechanical fuel pump.

I belive there were a few TBI grinds that did not have a fuel pump lobe. I believe someone had a '92 grind that had no lobe. My '90 had a lobe and it can be seen in the LT1 cam digest.
