a good winter diet?????
as many of you who have met me know, i am very big on lowering vehicle weight. i was wondering if anyone had any cool ideas on how to lighten the car up but still be at least kinda subtle about it. i have already removed all the insulation from the carpet and interior trim panels and put them all right back where they belong.
that is the kinda stuff that i like to try to do. also any tips on making lightweight bits to replace stock parts would be great.
thanks

Some early thirdgens had aluminum crash beams, if you replace both thats good for around 60-70 lbs
of course the spare tire is another 50+ or so
you can also swap to an S10 manual steering rack which ive been told is another 30 or so pounds off the front
rear seats all together were worth 27 lbs in my car
polution pump is like another 5-10 pounds
swapping to a 5 speed is 107 pounds lighter
etc

that crash beem thing is my kinda stuff. your rear seats seem kinda light. when i did my rear seats and seat belts it came to 42lbs.

cool. keep us posted when you get it on the scales. there are lightwight aluminm flywheels for the 5-speed too. If you are more into drag racing than handling you can get the art morrison front suspension worth 40lbs. but from you sig I think that would worsten your handling.

Yeah, the fiberglass hoods usually weigh around 70 pounds. Thats a good weight saver.

I belive my fiberglass ASCD ram air hood was around 70 pounds. That was including the crate though so I don't know. That is what the shipping guy told me how much the crate and the hood weighed. I didn't weigh the crate so just take a guess on how much the crate weighed.
I just remembered, you can get a set of aluminum rear drums from a trans am
I did this swap, the drums are about 7 lbs lighter each which doesnt sound like much but remember 7 lbs of rotating weight makes WAY more difference than 7 lbs on the body
You also can swap to WS6 crosslace wheels which i did and weighed the total difference to be around 45 pounds, again, rotating weight, huge difference

I have a fiberglass hood on my camaro, and that thing weighs almost nothing, probaly about 15-20 pounds. Also you could get a lift of type hood, that way you shed the hood shocks.
other stuff: remove ac, seats, insulation, spare tire, get light aluminum/magnesium wheels, lighter brake components, all body panels(fiberglass ones actually not too expensive), horn, airbag, stereo, glass(lexan), ground effects(depending on model), that's all I can think of right now....oh and you could put the good ole GM "iron duke" 4 cylinder in...just kidding.

Alliunum Underdrive Pulleys, 3 piece. Get rid of the Steel Pulleys. If that helps at all.

my plan is to bring the car out at or below 3200lbs. when i first started messing with the car it weighed 3650 with the full tank i had to carry to launch on street tires. now the car is down to 3370 with the quarter tank that i can run with my hoosier quick time pros.
my plans include v6 springs and sway bars, switching to a stock 4wheel disc brake setup(i don't think anything in the world is heavier than my baer 13in track kit), mini starter, compact battery(relocated to the trunk), removing the air bag, switching to a manual hatch release, a full radio removal, and chasing every useless wire out of the harness. the only weight going into the car is a set of tubular chromoly sub frame connectors.
i'll try to weigh as much of the stuff as i can and keep you guys posted.

I don't know what you intend to use your camaro for(road racing/drag racing or both)but there is no way I would loose thoose baer brakes if I were you. Some weight is well worth it, and the stock brakes on camaro's are just plain weak, and they fade like a son of a bitch. I have the baer track kit, and I'd rather loose the weight myself, then to give them up. just my opinion.

i am just taking the baer track kit off of this car. i use the car for my daily commute, all 2 miles round trip of it, and drag racing. i am working on building up a car to the scca street modified rules for solo racing, the baer stuff will be used for this.
