Is this repair worth it?

I just bought a 91 firebird V8 305 TBI, Auto tranny, It needs valve rails replaced which they are doing for me, but they said while they had the heads off, they would redo my entire engine for $300. Do you think it's worth it? And what do you think that "total" redo includes? Thanx for any help guys.

our assumption of the total redo doesnt mean squat. you better ask them that question. Time to ask yourself, cost, benifit, analysis sort of thing. is it worth it to repair the 305, or could the money, or a little more be benificial and worth the upgrade to a new engine. Ask em how much they would charge to replace the motor with a rebuilt 350 instead.

don't put the stock heads back on. get some better ones. we have some of the worst performing heads out there.

K cool...do you think he means he's gonna replace the heads with this "total redo"? He was saying something about "everything in the upper engine"

I think it is best if u were to call or talk to this guy and ask specificly what he was going to "redo" or replace. Then come back and ask us. If he does take the heads off and u replace them with like TPI heads would he have to have any computer work done? Will the car still run the same with those heads on the stock chip?
If I was u and they are takin all that stuff off anyways, I would have them replace all that stuff with aftermarket stuff. Like a different intake, heads, rockers,tb unit, the works. Then get a custom prom built buy some local prom burning company like Howell. Just an idea. It would cost more than 300.00 for sure though.

Well...I asked him specifically what he wants to replace and he said "rings, bearings, all new seals and gaskets and new pistons"...for 300 bucks...personally it doesn't sound like such a good deal anymore....

I thought he would do a valve job on the stock heads which would be a waste.

Sounds like he just wants to make some money. How many miles on it? It doesn't need to be redone if it's anything under say 130K. Usually.

Yea...it's got 180,000...and from what i've heard, that's about the right "redo everything" mileage for 305's...

Well yeah then you'd be better off with new rings if you're gonna have the top end overhauled.
