327 engine idea....
new 350 4 bolt roller block, larger journal 327 crank, 6.0" forged steel rods (can you run longer rods with a 350 piston??),hyrda rev kit to get it up to 7000 or 7500 when wanted
. just an idea

Hey Tas, you really want to twist the snot out of it? Drop in a 3" stroke crank out of a 265 or 4.3L v8. This crank came in some caprice's from I think 91 thru 96. Of coarse this would only be 302ci but talk about rpms, you could also use the stock 5.965" pm rods out of the same engine with stock 350 pistons in a 87 or later roller block. The original chevy 302 came with 2.02 double hump heads and 3030 cam. With all the new cams and heads on the market or for that matter from GM, this could be an interesting combo for tbi with the right programming.

well 3 reason I'd rather do a 327 vs. a 302.
1. to get good power out of a 302 I'd need a solid lifter cam to be able to rev that high.
2. 3rdgens are heavy cars and need some torque
3. a 327 might be able to use a hydrolic roller cam with a hydra rev kit and still be able to get almost up to the RPMs they traditionaly like

Well you might as well build a 350 out of a 400 block and destroke it with the 327 crank.
This would give even better air flow capabilities with the larger bore unshrouding the valves and still retain the rpm range of the 327.
Is money a problem or are we talking no limit. Either 327 or 350 could be built for less than say $4,000 to $4,500 maybe less.

Tas, why not just build a 350. A true street engine with a streetable cam, convertor and gears will never need anymore RPM capability than a 350, and even then a 350 with a decent crank and rods will beat a 327/302 anyway. Now if you just want to a little different and build a not-so-common motor, than by all means, a 327 is a great engine. i'm not knocking a 327, I built one for a friends' 74 Vega, and its a very quick little car. As you mentioned earlier, our cars in street trim a little on the heavy side and TQ of 350 will better suited. I've got a '65 model small journal 327 will TRW forged flattops, steel crank, and a set of factory forged rods w/ ARP bolts, Crane Blueprint L79 cam, and topped off with a set of pocket ported #462's that I have been dying to put in something, but I have a practical use for it yet( I bought it from a guy CHEAP that needed some quick cash for some reason!??)
But if you're stuck on a 327, go for it. If you don't have a crank yet, it might be worth mentioning that 68-72 307's had the 3.25 stroke crank and most of the ones I've pulled apart had "X" or "O" 5.7 rods in them. I know a guy that took the 307 out of his 71 Chevy C10, put the crank and rods in a 350 block with a set of Keith Black pistons and it ran great.

Tas, I have to apologize for getting a little carried away with my thoughts. I do like the idea of a 327 or 302 or 350 or any small block for that matter. It's easy to sit back and dream of engine combos and want to build them all, but when it comes down to the real world it all stops with how much we can afford to spend in the end.I hope you get to build your 327 sometime,I'm sure it would be an awesome engine.

ive thought about this. and finally decided 350 must be the best choice for all round.
400 383 350 327 302
first one is extreme, second torque motor, just right, high rmp, high rpm but lacking displacment.
any who have had trig, figure it out on a curve, youve got you "maxized revenue" at the 350 point.
but i would love to have a high reving american made muscle car.
high reving big motors have an amazing exhaust sound.

I'm putting a 383 in my Z28 right now. Its got an Eagle 4340 Crank and rods, Manley .240 domes w/ Speed Pro file-fit moly rings, Arp main and heads studs, Miloden windage tray, Comp custom ground solid roller, .609"int, .649"exh, 266*int, 272*exh @ .050, fully ported Dart Iron Eagle 215cc heads w/ 2.05" int, 1.60" exh, port-matched Wieand Team-G intake, Nitrous Works 150-300HP plate system, and topped off w/ a Demon 750. I'll keep everyone posted after I take it to the track, I can't wait to feel this badboy!!!

I had that exact same engine you described Tas. 4 bolt main block, 327 lg. crank, everything, and yes, I have revved it past 7500 RPMs. The day I ran the nitrious too lean and blew the engine, I buried the tach.
It was a good engine, but I didn't have it build up very much. I kept saving up to build a 427 small block, which I have and sold earlier today, so I'm building another one.
The 327 was a strong engine though, I raced and beat people with 350 TPI engines without too much trouble. It ran high 13's, but was definatly capable of mid to low 13's with some driving practice and a cooler day.
