White usually means a coolant leak. Maybe an intake, or head gasket. Do compression and leakdown tests before you throw in the towel.

Its probably the valve stem seals. mine used to do that too before we replaced them.

Valve stem seals no doubt. Oil can burn a white color, it's really blue but very faint. If it goes away then it has to be the valve seals. Replacing them is a PITA. You need special tools for the spring and need to take out spark plugs to put compressed air into or stuff in rope so the valve doesn't fall into the cylinder. I never got mine fixed, one year later the darn thing started to burn oil real bad (piston ring), so now new engine :-). If you can get a buddy that's done the fix before then cool, but if you can't then expect to pay a lot for labor to get it fixed. Parts are so cheap, like $18 for the seals, something like that, umbrella type I believe. Then you end up paying $400 for labor. It's up to you, but if you can live with it and swap new heads soon then do that. Besides, you loose like 4 drops of oil. Even as a daily driver I never lost enough oil to have to add a quart imbetween changes.

My 92 is just starting to have that problem, once in say 10 starts will it puff a little bit of smoke out. I know how do to them but I hate doing it.. I was wondering, did you do yours or did you bring it in? If you don't mind me asking about how much $$ it costs. Thanks

Josh

I have this same problem on my 89 RS. You start it up and it smokes for a bit and then it goes away. Anyone have the details on a step by step procedure on how do fix this?? If so I would appreciate it. I plan on attempting to fix it myself.

BTW this is my first post. This is the best board I have found yet!
