non-vortec 350 H.O. vs. L05?
how come the old 350 H.O. was rated at 300HP when the L05 350 TBI was rated at 200HP in trucks? was it because trucks are so heavy, the TBI, the cam, what? the heads are the same.

Isn't the L05 the caprice engine used between 92-93? I don't think any vortec headed v8 engine made less than 260hp! The L05 didn't have vortec heads. Buy the L05 for the bottom end and install vortec heads and you've got a very strong build since the L05 comes with hyp. pistons and the 350ho has cast to cut the corners.

this is a non-vortec question. They are not 50 state legal without the whole '96-'99 truck injection system on top so I don't want to talk about those.
The L05 was used in 350 Caprices with TBI and was the TBI 350 in trucks for years before the L31 '96+ Vortec 350 came around.

The truck L05 has a non roller cam, and 4 bolt mains. The car L05 has a roller cam and 2 bolt mains. You probably already knew that just thought I'd say it.
I don't know the specs for the old HO, are you sure the heads are the exact same ones?
I think the reasons for the lower power could be:
-lower compression ratio, 8.7 or something like that
-low end torque cam(speculation)
-restrictive manifolds
All I think of.

well I just emailed http://www.sdpc2000.com/ so we should know for sure by tomorrow.
well I still don't know if the heads are the same but there are some major differeances. check out my email:
Actually the LO5 Caprice engine is a roller cam engine, and the 300/330 HP
engine is a hydraulic flat tappet cam. The cylinder heads on the LO5 are
stock TBI heads and the cam is like the vortec truck cam. The ZZ4 cam is a
little too much for the TBI computer, but the production LT4 cam should work
good.

The heads(on the L05) are definately swirl port junk. The 350 that was in my car before the 400 was an '89 truck TBI engine. I didn't really look when I put the engine in, but when I pulled it out this past summer to make way for the 400, I looked down the intake port with my flashlight and I said,
"HOLY SH-T! Half the port is blocked off!!"
I couldn't belive what a joke those heads are. No way any engine is going to make 300 hp with those heads.
