Which cam would be better-LT1 or L98?
Which cam would be better-LT1 or L98?
I plan on swapping out mr. peanut sometime soon, but I can't decide which cam would work best for me. I have my mods listed below, and sometime in the future I would like to put on a new intake manifold, and perhaps gasket match it; so I want a cam that would work fine with what I have now. I'd like to retain the stock chip if I can, and maybe be able to pass emissions if I see fit. I plan on swapping out the springs at the same time, so hopefully I can have something like a 2000-5000 rpm powerband.
Thanks,
Brandon

I'm using the LT1 cam in my 350 that I ordered 4-5 years ago and it has ran great with it and the TBI. The Holley manifold that I installed recently cured my EGR code that was always being set. There is an erratic idle but it's not that bad. I would recommend a set of good heads and a decent manifold if your going to do the cam swap though b/c the stock cam and heads won't allow you to use the cams full potential. The cheapest route would be to buy some vortec heads and a vortec "carb" manifold and this should allow you to see a nice increase in power....however the vortec heads don't have EGR provisions.

The LT1 cam and L98 cam have almost the same duration, but the LT1 cam has more lift. Go with it. Try to get a 92-95 LT1 cam, as the 96-97's are slightly different.

Nate has a great price on his LT1 cam there. I would recommend changing the intake while you have it off. Stock is almost as bad as that peanut cam. The Edelbrock TBI intake will give you a painless installation and more HP. Your powerband should pull well to the 6000rpm range due to the less cubes of the 305 vs 350.

Kevin - the LT1 cam that I am looking at is from a 95 - 97 part # 12551705, will I still be able to use it?

Yes you can use it, but the dowel pin on the front will be too long. You can just cut it off to the correct length, since thats easier than trying to remove the thing, its stuck in there tight.
definetly get rid of the stock manifold while doing a cam swap since youll be pulling it off anyways. Even with the stock cam the edelbrock TBI intake seems to pull much better and further. used to hit a brick wall at 4500 now i can pull to at least 5k with ease...still havent went over that yet tho.
I thought about swapping a LT1 cam and world heads on my 305 but i decided to get a lo5, then put a cam in it and heads someday. figured id replace the worn out 305 with a brand new 350. Then ill get to watch the 700r4 crap out...
