I need cheap performnce tips for my 91 rs camaro

I have a fully loaded automatic 91 rs Camaro, with a 305 tbi. It has a hypertech chip and a k&n. I am a student so i'm always short on cash. I was woundering what i could do or buy to get more low/mid end power (i have about 270ft torque). I plan to add an exhaust cut out behind the cat, and put in a limited-slip. thank you for your help.

Ah yes the age old question where to start? Well a good place to start is an open air element $40 at any parts store thats a definate. Throw away that stock air cleaner assembly. A flowmaster catback is great, and a shift kit is also good. Go take a look at the TBI board, there is guys there that really know there ****.

This is definatly something for the TBI board. We get the same question at least one every other week. Search the forum a bit and you'll find some really long threads that'll help a lot.

From past posts I'm going to tell you what we all have agreed on for best bang for buck.
First was open element, $20 from summit and you'll feel the difference. You don't even need to move any of the sensors into the new air cleaner. Just zip tie the IAT to the firewall somewhere. Next mod would be 3.73 gears with SLP take off $99 posi if you want get up and go. It'll cost a pretty penny and you'll loose some top speed but how many times are you at 110mph plus? Next mod would be headers. Cat-back is nice but our exhaust manifolds and y-pipe are about as flow efficient as the stock L03 heads (crap). An exhaust cut out might work a little for top end but it's really not as worth while as doing the exhaust all at once. Save the money up and you'll have a seat in the pants difference. 4th bang for the buck mod is getting new heads and new intake manifold but that will cost you a pretty penny. My advise, tell the g-friend (reason college guys like us don't have money) that you need to pinch pennies and have her pay for some stuff.
I hope you go with the open element and full exhaust.

How does that 350Ho perform on your RS? I was thinking about the same swap. What do I need to know?

alright i posted this same question many months ago and have read numeros post on this board and have done some studying and this is the order i plan on doing my mods.1st was my open element cost near nothing 2nd is my slp posi and 3.42's 3rd i plan on doing either a cat back or new manifold depends on which i find the deal on. 4th which ever one is next and 5th i plan on putting on headers . after that i plan on putting in a lt1 cam this is all coming soon and after i graduate college i want a 350 maybe even blown or mybe i'll keep the 305 and put a supercharger on it. the most expensive mod is the gears until i graduate. nothing over $350 i plan on at once

Yo Pimpininthers,

Sounds like you are on the right track. I would get exhaust as your next mod after the gears. you will want exhaust is you get a manifold and cam.

Say I made the mods suggested to a 91 Camaro that I'm hoping to buy soon... If I put the open element filter, posi 3.42, full exhaust w/ headers, and spaced off the TB. What would my expected quarter mile times be with a 5 speed? I'm not just trying to ask an ignorant question, I'm considering buying this car and I want to know what I'm getting into with this L03. Is it worth it or should I spend a little extra for the TPI with a 5 speed?
Thanks,
David

Ooooh haha I just had a great idea...
I could go ahead and buy the 91 L03 5-speed RS, then... (this is the ingenious part) I could start building up the TPI 350 I have in the garage (Which by the way IS for sale, look in the parts for sale forum), and while I do that I can use the old L98 parts on my L03! For instance say I get a new cam for the L98... I put the old cam on the L03... then I get the vortec heads for the 350, have the L98 heads milled (pocket ported possibly) and put them on the L03. Then I can just add a Performer manifold to the list (and of course headers that fit both motors) and I think that I would have a killer L03. What do you guys think?
L03 with L98 cam, milled L98 heads, Performer manifold, and TPI sized headers... Anyone think that it's a good idea?
Later,
David

IMO, I would just stay with TBI, the only reason that it puts out less power then the TPI cars is becuase GM made it that way. Look at some of the TBI swaps that have been done, I see no reason to go through all the time and hassle to switch. If you look back about a week there was a nice motor swap that was done, from what I have heard, had great results.
