Open Element Questions

I have read everyone is doing this, but with what filters? K&N, Edelbrock, Fram, etc? Does everone use a cheap upper and lower piece then use a K&N, or by it in one kit like the Edelbrock Pro Flo? Also what about the fitting on the exhaust manifold that attaches to the snorkel of the filter assembly via a metal tube(Thermac?), does that need to be plugged on the manifold and with what?

Open element is the only way to go!!!!! Last friday I put a Mr. Gasket 14"x3" drop base on in ten mintues. best 32 bucks I ever spent. Sounds and responses great. I had no problems because i followed snflupiqus's directions to a tee. Snflu You Da Man!!!!!! By the way I'm running a paper filter but will go back to K&N (had a K&N in my snorkel, but it is to small for the open element)

Get the 14x3 Summitt OE kit for 39.99. It comes with a "fake" K&N but nobody can tell.

Not even me!

The heat stove coming off the exhaust manifold is just to heat up the incoming air. I don't believe it's the thermac. Just leaving it unplugged should cause no trouble. Most people get the cheaper OE's and stuff a K&N filter inside. There's nothing wrong with saving money. I'm gonna get the chrome K&N OE cause I just think it looks better Now only if I could decide to get drop base or not, lol. When it comes to spending money, I'm such a procrastinator.

I have an old chromed non-drop base that I bead blasted and painted it blue to match the car, and I just went to the parts store and went through filter boxes till I found a $3.00 Purolator filter that fit it, it works great, and not using the tube that runs from your exhaust manifold will not cause any problems, but with you living in Kansas it gets pretty cold there so it may affect how it runs when it's very cold, I don't know, but I have started my car here in south alabama with it 15 degrees outside and it started and ran fine.

The THERMAC is inside the stock air filter housing (where that little **** is on the 'arm' of the housing, vaccuum tubes directly underneath it).

The pipe on the exhaust manifold is used when it's cold out, helps warm the engine quicker.

I just got the K&N non drop 14x4, you'd want a 14x3 for clearance.
I left the heat stove on cause I'll be getting some headers soon, s no bother there.
The swoosh sound it makes is very kewl, when you take off from a light and the swoosh slowly fades out, very kewl.

The heat stove is actually part of the THERMAC system.

The THERMAC thingy in the air cleaner warms up and allows engine vaccum to open the valve in the air cleaner inlet to let cool air in.

I tried the Edelbrock ProFlo 14x3. It cleared my coil but was bending my linkage. So I guess I will have to try another brand until one works. THanks for all the info

About a year ago, I bought a Mr. Gasket non-drop base open air system...came with a dinky one inch air filter....threw it away and bought a 3" filter...well today...i was at pepboys...and i saw this product by Motormite (the red boxes with HELP! on the top) called an Air Cleaner stud kit...wasnt really interested in it...until i saw a little one inch adapter on it....went ahead and bought it...discovered that the adapter screwed onto the stock stud....i had already bought one of those Chevy bowtie air cleaner wing nuts....and it fit the adapter...so then i went and bought a 4" filter...and it screws down fine...and it does leave an indention in that hood material....but dont think its hitting the hood...anyone see problems i might face? Eventually..i'll be getting an ASCD ram air hood.
