Performer + TBI adaptor = hood clearance?

I did a search, but couldn't find any information that addressed this question specifically. When installing Vortec heads with a Performer Vortec carb manifold w/ TBI adaptor, what kind of issues can I expect to face with respect to hood clearance?

You should be fine as clearance goes. The performer has about the same height as the stock manifold so don't worry.

I kinda' knew that the manifolds were the same height. I'm worried about the addition of the adaptor, plus an open element filter. The adaptor is, what, 1 inch tall? That seems like it might give me problems. I know plenty of people here have done it.

Thanks for the reply, Steve.

I share your concern, I have an Edelbrock 3706 and Holley TBI adapter sitting right next to me waiting to go in.

Currently I have the stock TBI intake and a K&N 14"x2.25" open element on it, and the wing nut is already rubbing in the insulation on the hood. Even if the performer is only .5" taller than stock, I'd still have to worry about the 1" adapter I have.

z28 boy has the exact setup and his is VERY close, hopefully he'll post. As for me, I'm using the RPM intake and the 1" adaptor plate with stock hood. The only way to get this to fit: Remove insulation, jack up the edges of the hood (with adjustable nuts, no spacers!), remove under hood bracing where air cleaner will be, and use the edelbrock low profile "proflow" air cleaner. I had to modify the air cleaner because the inside bracing that holds the air cleaner was hitting the top of the injectors. So I had to cut out a little bit of the bracing. It doesn't screw on but it doesn't move enough to creat any problems. This is my quick fix, when I get a cowl hood I'll go with a standard air cleaner but until then I have to live with my problow system.

I've got the edelbrock performer for vortecs along with the 1 inch holley adapter and an open element that's 2 3/4 inch tall and 9 inches around. It's a K&N and the base of the air cleaner assembley raises the cleanner up a little too. I measured it and from the highest point of the valve cover to the top of the air cleaner was 7.5 inches. I think I have about a half of an inch clearance to the hood. I would put in an element that has a larger diameter, but it would rub since the hood slopes down. It should fit for you in some way. I would suggest before closing your hood to place a piece of playdo on top of the aircleaner and see how much the hood squishes it, then you'll know for sure. Make sure you check it at the point closest to the front of the car because that will be where it would make contact first.

Sounds like solid advice, Birmass, thanks. You don't suppose that the Formula hood bulge gives you a little clearance that the usual hood wouldn't have, do you?

I gotta question. Is there a difference in height when it comes down to camaros and firebirds? 89BlwnRs, how could the wing nut possibly be touching the insulation? Do you have a TB spacer or did you leave the spacer ring on top the TB?? I've heard plenty of people run a K&N 14X3 with no clearance issues at all.

I don't think the formula hood really gives any more clearance because the bulge is on one side. I accidentally put a 3 inch filter with a higher element assembly and put a small dent in the hood . It's not noticable, but you know... Anyways, it dented the regular part of the hood without the bulge. If my setup fit under a formula hood, it will fit under any firebird hood. Not sure about camaros though.
