Changing engine coolant - a few questions.

Okay I think I know how I can drain the coolant. But what can I do with the waste? I live on a lake and have a septic tank, and dont want my lawn turning brown. Plus I have pets that would like to eat the antifreeze. Who takes used antifreeze? And how much does my car hold, so I can proprely measure? Thanks.

well catch it all in a pan, walk over to the woods, dump it in. Or you can put it in milk jugs and take it to Olsen Tire and they should take it. Any auto repair place will probably take it for free.

You dont really need to measure the antifreeze. Where do you live..up north where it snows? If it gets really cold Id just put one jug in and fill the rest with water. IF you live in florida or somewhere like it, just put a little bit in since water cools better.

I usually put 1 gallon of antifreeze in my car, I think that makes it safe to about -10 or 20 degree's, which is plenty for where I live. It's good to hear of someone else that care's about disposing of coolant properly rather than just dumping it in the woods or down the storm drain, I take my used oil and coolant down to the local fast lube place and they take it, I would think theres one around you that will take it too, just stop and ask.

My car' entire cooling system is rated to hold 17.2 quarts of a 50/50 mix. I would think that the Firebirds would be about the same.

50/50 is the safest ratio to keep. It increases the boiling point of the water, lowers the freeze point, and helps dissipate heat better than just water alone. It's good from -30 deg up to about 250 deg. I know how that's important to you because I live around the Great Lake Region like you. And it do get cold.

Straight water is only good until 32 deg. before it freezes, and it boils at 212 deg. That Water Wetter stuff helps that in warmer areas, but don't ever let it freeze. I've read that it expands more than the water.

The easiest way to mix the antifreeze/water is a big iced tea pitcher. Mix it 50/50 and poor as much as you can in. Then use whatever is left to top it off after the engine is warmed up a few times. Check it daily for about 3-4 days. That'll allow you to keep good tabs on it. 17.2 quarts is 4.3 gallons. That's 2.15 gal. of each. That's a lot of fluid & weight. About 24 lbs. No, actually about 32 at 8lbs./gal. I dunno what antifreeze weighs.

OK, I'm babbling now. Time to say BYE.

For the safety of your pets, if you spill any coolant, hose it down as much as possible to dilute it. The best thing to do actually would be to keep them in the house till you're done.

hey jack, its in general engine, i asked, too much to type,

nm, im just lazy,

ok, HERE WE GO:

go to auto store, pick up a prestone FLush kit, i bought mine for 4.94$ it has it where your supposed to connect a t into something, but i didnt do what it said cause i was short on time, what i did is i got some auto lockers from craftsmen, squeezed the clip on the lower radiator hosed, wrestled from the top of the car to pull it off, i had a tub under it, its gonna leak, then pull off the thermostat housing, and put hose in, and turned on, kept it in till most anit freeze came out, then i put in this cleaner from prestone, so then there was only water and the cleaner, then i started the car with the the heater on. for ten minutes, then i opened the bottom hose again and put the hose in where the thermostat housing was, and turned it on flushing all that out, it mostly fell on the floor. then flushed with water, closed looped it(connected everything) then ran again. cooled, let it drip from lower hose, then after that, placed new thermostat and gasket, and 50.50 mix, closed it up and was good to go.

if any question, post and ill check again tommorow. or email or im me Firebretha@aol.com

keeping in mind that if anyone else says anything, do it their way if its opposite from me, i did my first today.

and keep in mind guys, most of this stuff isnt from nature, and will kill nature. so be thoughtful and go to a firestation and drop it off.

thanx

i recently changed my timing chain and put in the new dexron antifreeze ..the red stuff... it seems to be pretty good and the best part is that you dont even have to change the fluid for up to 5 years(so they say)...
